Power steering pressure?
Power steering pressure?
Basically my power steering pipes are about rotted out and I'm wanting to put an oil cooler on there instead. Does anyone know what sort of pressure the cooler lines have running through them?

Re: Power steering pressure?
The PAS pressure is constant...it has a pressure relief valve which maintains constant pressure irrespective of the revs of the motor / pump. The general consensus seems to be around 1000 psi.
I would recommend you call a PAS repair shop and ask the question there. These guys should have an accurate answer for you, as they would test these pumps as a procedure during repairs to these systems. The DIY method is to disconnect the output side of the pump and attach a hydraulic pressure guage to the pump, start the motor, and raise the revs to around 1000rpm. This will give you an accurate reading...

1000psi seems a lot for a cooler to take do you think the high pressure is just from the pump to rack line? I'm going to have another look in a bit.

Re: Power steering pressure?
No doubt that sort of pressure will be too high for an oil cooler. Have a look at this retrofit kit for a 2.8 bmw e36...it may give you the info you require to achieve your objectives....

Re: Power steering pressure?
Just read it's high pressure from pump to rack then low pressure return from rack to cooler to pump could do with measuring the pressure really now I've took it all to bits

Re: Power steering pressure?
Are you planning on loosing the power steering, or running the oil cooling system for the blower via the PAS?
Re: Power steering pressure?
The pressure in the pipe that routes around infront of the radiator will be very low since its going straight back to the reservoir, which is vented. From memory the pressure side going to the rack is 1200psi.

Hi Daz...have a look at this...seems the connections for a cooler can be routed via the oil filter housing as a "retrofit"....

Re: Power steering pressure?
Basically I'm wanting to put a cooler where the looped pipe goes round the front of the rad as Deano said as the pipes are very badly corroded the pipes going from the pump to rack are fine. So a standard oil cooler mocal type will be fine to run on the low pressure side Deano?
Re: Power steering pressure?
I'm not loosing the pas just don't want to pay bmw prices for new pipe work
And the charger I'm putting on is self cooled and doesn't need a remote cooler.

Ah...then try calling one of the breakers yards, or possibly one of the guys on the forum who are breaking a z3...they will have hoses for sale??
Re: Power steering pressure?
I just thought I'd run a cooler there though instead as my intercooler is likely to be in the way as well
Re: Power steering pressure?
Another option is getting some 12mm tubing and bending it into a loop using the old part as the pattern. The BMW part has beaded end fittings but you don't need that - the flexible pipes should mate up ok with jubilee clips.
