Re: Petrol Tank Straps
First time I've heard of "replacing" straps....I reckon if you're right about replacement, you're in for quite an uncomfortable task...the straps fit to the car at 2 points... one between the tank and the body behind the seats and the other to the body on the rear bumper side. There are 2 straps, and you will need to support the tank from underneath before removing the straps. It's made from plastic, so best have a suitable padding on the jack / support. Also you will need the car up on jackstands high enough to work comfortably underneath if you dont have access to a hoist. The items required are :- #'s 5 & 6 / and the "pads" which fit under the straps on the corners... #'s 11 & 12.

Buy them from BMW. I changed mine a few years back since they were rusty. Very easy job. You just need to get the car up in the air on stands. Change them one at a time. Suggest you do it with low fuel level.

I was looking at mine recently, it looks like you need to drop the sub frame, however sounds like Deano found he did not need to. Any more details on this Deano?
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Petrol Tank Straps
One important aspekt is to be sure that the dampers between the straps and the tank is in good shape. thats number 11 and 12 on the image from Realoem. Otherwise the straps eat into the tank.It is problematic without dropping the subframe but then on the other hand it's very easy especially as you can work at one in a time, as described. Here is an image of what it looks like:
Re: Petrol Tank Straps
Funny coincidence - yesterday I replaced my foam pads with folded pieces of an inner tube. (There was a rattling noise due to "play" of the tank)

Re: Petrol Tank Straps
You don't need to drop the subframe unless you want to remove the tank...A bit of squeezing etc and you can manage the re-fit of the straps.
Re: Petrol Tank Straps
Looking at my old pics I had the subframe off so easy access. With the subframe on I expect you will be able to pull the old straps off but may need to bend them a bit. It should be easy to figure out if its possible by having a good look at it.Zed Free wrote:I was looking at mine recently, it looks like you need to drop the sub frame, however sounds like Deano found he did not need to.
