Re: 3.0 Z3 just been posted on PHeads
At a guess, I think the seller is suggesting the M54 engine is the basis of the S54 M3 engine. A bit tenuous to say the least, but they will have plenty of time to amend the advert because it will never sell at that price anyway!
Re: 3.0 Z3 just been posted on PHeads
Didn't know that BMW did a 3 litre 228 HP M3 engine? You live and learn!!!
( My 2.8 must be nearly an M3 then!)

Re: 3.0 Z3 just been posted on PHeads
I am going to call this guy and hopefully have a look.
What should I be asking/looking for re the engine.
I will certainly get the car checked out if interested but a bit worried about the engine question.
Thanks

Re: 3.0 Z3 just been posted on PHeads
Nothing! It's a normal 3.0 228 HP Z3. It's either an error in the ad, or the seller doesn't know too much about BMW's!!!!

Which is a good thing if you know more than him

Re: 3.0 Z3 just been posted on PHeads
M3 engine? The vendor sounds like another dreamer - as for the 'Fenders' being more 'aggressive' etc etc they are the same as fitted to all the non-M Z3 models of that age.
I remember seeing another 3 litre Z3, which according to the over-proud owner, had aerodynamic improvements to reduce drag - not even BMW's PR writers could come up with that description of the later rear end, having to be happy with describing it as being 'Muscular and aggressive' - which sounded like a description of a male hamster on heat!
Where do these people come from?

Re: 3.0 Z3 just been posted on PHeads
Can someone let me know if the rear end of a 3.0 is any wider thant the 2.8 (1997)
Re: 3.0 Z3 just been posted on PHeads
I think people genuinely get confused down to the M badges on the interior and so think its an ///M Car. Surprising really as being well kept you would think the owner would know a little more about what he/she owns, or a ploy to attract unsuspecting punters. Looks a good example and nice to see one not looking tatty and worn out as many of them are now

Seller clearly hasn't a clue. Price is very hopeful too-probably based on all the misconceptions in the ad!
Re: 3.0 Z3 just been posted on PHeads
Not sure about being well kept, doesn't appear to have been serviced for at least 5 years.

Re: 3.0 Z3 just been posted on PHeads
Here is the latest.
Went to see the car. Retired couple and he has owned the car for the past 7 years. Brought it from main BMW dealers for nearly £13k.
All paperwork checks out and the car has only done around 3k in the past four years. Car looks as good as in the advert.
The car has not been used for a five months. He drove for a while and then I did. In short all seems ok except three points which may or may not be a problem. Firstly the ABS/traction light came on to start with and would not go off. I remembered that this was perhaps a common problem (had 2.8 for four years) and I suggested we stop, turn off the engine, wait a few mins and then start up again. Light went off. Same for the brake light indicator. Any comments on this would be appreciated.
The hood opens and closes fine. I know that it was a windy day but when doing say over 60 mph there wss an intermitent wind noise from where the roof met the top of the screen. Must have been wind noise as it disappeared when at slower speeds. Do people have any idea what might cure this.
Sorry one more. The radio is the BMW business model. It works fine but he said that sometimes the display breaks up. You can still make out the station but it is not always clear.
Thanks in advance.

Re: 3.0 Z3 just been posted on PHeads
Doh! Sorry guys, got my blue Z3 for sale ads mixed up! Ignore me I'm talking rubbish, it's a blue Z3m in another post that hasn't been serviced.
Re: 3.0 Z3 just been posted on PHeads
I can't help you with the potential seriousness of those faults as I am not as mechanically minded as some on here, but I can offer an opinion that even without those faults, that is a very optimistic asking price.johnz3 wrote:Any chance of an early reply please. I would hope that there is plenty of room for negotiation?
Re: 3.0 Z3 just been posted on PHeads
Sorry should have said in advert. If I buy we have agreed £4500
Re: 3.0 Z3 just been posted on PHeads
Could the radio display be down to condensation or damp.
Mine does the same thing on one particular character on the display but once the car has warmed up, literally, it corrects itself. The car goes out infrequently and is kept outside so to see if I can prevent this I've put one of those moisture absorbing bags in the car.

Re: 3.0 Z3 just been posted on PHeads
The ABS / Traction light could be all manner of things from ABS transducer, Steering angle sensor to ABS pump or even just damp in the electrical connections. You need to read the error codes to get an idea and even then it might not be accurate. Just remember when the light is on the DSC is disabled because the computer can't make interventions if it doesn't know whats going on.
I speak from experience here. I bought a 3.0 in 2012 with 70K miles with the same problem and bought a scanner which told me it was the steering angle sensor at fault. I had planned to renew lots of parts to give it a refresh anyway so thought I'd leave it till last. After replacing all the springs, shocks, wishbones, bushes and getting a laser alignment, the fault cleared as has never come back. My guess is the worn parts were knocking out the geometry.
One thing I do know,if that car has 67K the suspension will be shot if it hasn't be replaced by now.

Re: 3.0 Z3 just been posted on PHeads
I am thinking the roof noise could be a couple of things:-
- The top rubber seal could need a little conditioning with something like gummiplege, this helps restore dried out rubber seals.
The roof itself could need a little adjustment to pull it in closer to the top seal, this is easily done by adjusting the length of the hooks.
Re: 3.0 Z3 just been posted on PHeads
Lovely late Z3, I've been told (on good authority) that that generation of 6-cylinder engine is virtually indestructible and is well capable of taking a bit of servicing abuse. If the weather perks up towards the Spring it will go quickly. Just buy it
Re: 3.0 Z3 just been posted on PHeads
I've just done a Glass's valuation on mine this evening with 26K on the clock and bearing in mind its a 1.9, and its telling me,
Trade in excellent - £3705.00
Trade in average - £3260
Trade in below average - £2930
Dealer retail price - £5360
Private sale - £4380
I think the selling price is about right if the car is immaculate and if it has a FSH and considering the mileage is below average. The colour is slightly rarer too which is a bonus. There was an 02 plate 3.0 non sport in red with a hardtop with 66k at a garage near to me recently which sold for £6300 in good condition. I think condition is everything and if the Zed is immaculate then buy it as they're becoming harder to find with lowish mileage and good condition, theres alot of average and tatty Zeds out there. Re the faults if can get some more definitive answers before getting back to the seller then it could help bargaining the price down a little further.

Took the plunge and agreed £4500. That is dependant on it going through an Mot with no probs.

Hope it gets through the MOT for you OK, good advise from Caledonian though, maybe get the garage to read the codes (if there are any) whilst it is getting an MOT?johnz3 wrote:Thanks everyone.

Re: 3.0 Z3 just been posted on PHeads
HI John
Sorry for the late response, but these are my thoughts on the issues you mentioned.
1) ABS/ACS lights - I have this on my 2.0L and there was very recently a thread on it - see below.
http://www.zroadster.net/forum/viewtopi ... =5&t=39925
The thread owner has tried to fix it with a 2nd hand module and an independent re-map which (to date) hasn't worked according to the thread, however the modules can be sent off to ECUtuning to be repaired and then they will work because they will be the module off the car and therefore no re-mapping required. All this is for £200 plus VAT. This I believe is the worst case scenario, if you are lucky it may well be that one of the sensors on the wheels has a loose connection clip (theres also a thread for that on here somewhere - green clip) That scenario would be <£20.
2) Wind noise on the roof. As mentioned already in this thread, this is usually the result of seals that need replacing, again there are a number of threads on the site about it and new seals and/or alternatives can be found on ebay quite cheaply - especially as there are so many Z3's being broken at the moment. Failing that the suggested tightening of the closure clips may well be sufficient
3) Radio... my advise - get a new one.... You can pick up a good head unit from halfords these days for £50 which include BT Audio and handfree without the need for any additional kit - including DAB radio.
Hope that helps?

Re: 3.0 Z3 just been posted on PHeads
The Slip Control Module is affected by low battery voltage, so if the car has not been on charge during its neglected last few months, the battery will be past its best. This may also be the cause of the radio display acting up.
I always wonder why 'fastidious' owners who spend lots of mpney on fancy polishes and fancy oil changes neglect their battery . . . get ready to buy a new one!

One thing I never checked out was whether the drivers seat suffered from that slight forward/backward movement.
I had the problem on my 1997 2.8 and used the plastic pieces to sort. By 2002 had this problem been solved please.

Now the owner of a 3.0 BMW Z3. Got it for £4250 so well pleased. Thanks for all the advice.
Re: 3.0 Z3 just been posted on PHeads
What happened was that I had the car throughly checked out and part of that was for the garage to identfy anything that would fail on an MOT. Nothing found and a full MOT planned for next Thursday. So happy with that.

Re: 3.0 Z3 just been posted on PHeads
One of the things that the mehanic said was that the light on off swith did not always dim the dashboard lights and it was probably a new switch that was needed.
Anyone know if this is a common fault.
Thanks

... You could try opening the switch and using contact cleaner...failing that as a successful solution, then new switch..

They get dust in them and makes the contact not always work. Congrats on the new car...You're about to start a serious relationship, and with the spring season coming up, you'll be even more delighted once the roof can come down...
