2.8 windscreen surround

Post by eddie1 »

Does anyone know what is behind the tape like surround on the windscreen of the Z3. Mine has a little bit of damage and I would like to replace it or is there an alternative, such as paint or even getting it wrapped! Is it paint behind even? It seems to be fitted under the windscreen rubber, a body work friend of mine thinks the windscreen may need to come out to do it properly. Any ideas folks? appreciate your comments.

I had a 2.8 Z3 1997. I removed mine with the help of a hair dryer and fingers and I stripped it right back. Underneath mine was the colour of the car (artic silver) and the paintwork underneath was perfect. I am sure there are a number of posts on the forum.

Bit scared to look, just in case it isn't the same as the cars cosmos black. But if two of you have done it, I'll probably risk it!

I was fearful that there wouldn't be paint under the vinyl wrap but there was :)

The stuff is similar to what these days is called "wrap".... it's simply a sticky backed vynil which has been applied. Getting it out from under the rubber seal without damaging the rubber is the only aspect you need to take care with. A plastic spatula is advisable to assist in lifting the rubber...ie. don't use anything metal... you risk damage to the rubber and paintwork.

Hey Sirius, brilliant, done in about an hour and a half! Did it as you said petrol & a microfibre cloth, the door pillars came of a treat, in the end got a small piece of wood wrapped the cloth around it to scrape off the goo! The window top, I found it easier to wet the goo with petrol, then role it into big 'bogies!' with my finger. That bit I did in about 10 mins. The only thing being, on the passenger door pillar, there is a slight mottling. Nothing to do with the procedure as the whole thing was done the same.
I'll have a word with the guy who will polish the car when its in, to see if he knows why. Might be heat damage from when the vinyl was fitted at the factory! It might polish out! ....... Thanks again, great site!

Good work! Let's see some pictures though - I always like to see a Cosmos Black Z3, it's definitely the best colour (not that I'm biased, you understand!)
