name that part!!

Post by z3nomness »

in my search to find the cause of my misfire whilst in traffic (really getting on my wick now :x )

I had a good poke around all the hoses I could access checking for cracks.

found this:

Its a 20.ltr engine

can anyone tell me what it is or is it needed?? doesn't look oem to me??

Looks very much like an aftermarket part to me.

Not familiar with the 2.0 unit but it looks like some "aftermarket item and hose" joining into the hoses going to the servo unit. Not sure exactly what it is, did the previous owner have something fitted which was "feeding" off this system. Personally, I would return it to OE for brake/safety reasons.

Not a clue,

the car was bought from a garage.

not sure if its for a hose connector. it looks like a pressure relief valve of sorts, under the sliver grid/gauze thingy is a plastic diafram on a spring :?:

It's an Ecotek valve, not see on of those for years! Akin to those £20 resistor chips on ebay!

I had a quick google and the suggestion is that they allow a "controlled vacuum leak" to weaken the combustion mixture and provide better fuel economy and MOT emissions. The stuff I read suggests it is "old technology" and I can't see that it would help a relatively modern car (like a z3) where the combustion mixture is accurately controlled by pre and post combustion process sensors. Generally, an unmetered vacuum leak can cause running issues. Furthermore it's cut into the brake servo hose

I have the same ecotek thing on my car when I bought it. Still need to bring it back to oem, just have been lazy about it. I'm pretty sure you have i in the wrong place though, may want to change that over to oem asap.

so I ripped that bloody ecotek valve off this morning and drove the 60 miles to work.

car seems more settled and no drop in rev/misfire whilst in traffic. fingers crossed that was the source of the problem.

I'll monitor it for a few days and see.
