ABS error code - speed sensor required ?
ABS error code - speed sensor required ?
Hi,
The error code says: -
41 Speed signal, rear right (electrical fault)
I checked the connections and also removed the sensor and clean it but the dashboard lights and error codes are still there
Do I need a new sensor ?

Re: ABS error code - speed sensor required ?
Have you driven the car? Sometimes it needs a few miles to reset the sensor
Re: ABS error code - speed sensor required ?
I did drive it but not that far - I'll drive it a bit further and see
Re: ABS error code - speed sensor required ?
I agree, I'm not totally sure of the Z3 characteristic but typically some of these "faults" require three start/stop driving cycles to turn themselves off.bertiejaffa wrote:Have you driven the car? Sometimes it needs a few miles to reset the sensor
Re: ABS error code - speed sensor required ?
You need to clear the codes using INPA, or similar. Have you done that?

Re: ABS error code - speed sensor required ?
we just had this on ours only ours was a front one .new sensor from eurocar parts £23.00 I think fixed it
Re: ABS error code - speed sensor required ?
I cleared the error code and the dashboard lights went out but came back on after driving down the road.
I'll try clearing them again and driving it a bit more
It is the rear sensor and eurocarparts have a couple of different ones: -
Eicher - £55
Vemo - £74
does it matter which one ?
I haven't tried the BMW dealer yet but I guess they will be dearer

you maybe surprised - I would also check ebaydrm wrote:I cleared the error code and the dashboard lights went out but came back on after driving down the road.

£108 from the dealer
Re: ABS error code - speed sensor required ?
had an idea - would it be worth swapping the 2 rear abs sensors around ?
then reading the error codes again - this would then prove it was the actual sensor.
current error code reads rear right - if I swap them around and the error codes reads rear left then I know it is the sensor
is this a wise move

Yes, providing that you don't damage the screw heads when you are doing it .drm wrote:had an idea - would it be worth swapping the 2 rear abs sensors around ?

The wires may be different lengths, but worth investigating. [edit: the same sensor is fitted to both sides]
Check out prices from salvage. They either work or they don't. No need to buy new.
See http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part?id ... 4521164474 for all vehicles it's fitted to.

Re: ABS error code - speed sensor required ?
Before you do that, if you have INPA, then I seem to recall a screen that shows the individual wheel rotation speeds. If you can spin the wheel, you should be able to see the numbers change.
There are two things you are looking for - a dirty or dodgy sensor that is missing pulses and giving an erratic reading, or a broker sensor and/or wiring loom which is producing no pulses whatsoever.
You may need to try spinning one of the other wheels to verify that it will give a reading when the wheel is off the ground. If not, then you will have to rig up the cable so you can drive the car with the diagnostics plugged in, which makes it more difficult to fiddle with the wiring between tests.
If all that fails, then I don't see why you can't swap the sensors over. Just be careful of damaging them when getting them out, or you might find you'll be needing two of the blighters!
Edit: Just found the screen in my INPA HowTo in the Knowledgebase:
Cheers R.

Good idea, Rob.
If you do run with the rear wheels, make sure that you support the rear axle on the lower arms so the suspension is in the normal running position. Failure to do this will damage the CV joints.

I don't have INPA - I have a C110 scanner that showed up the error code - I don't think it will have this functionality
Yes if I damage the other when swapping it over then it won't be such a good idea

Why don't you have a look at the thread that lists members with INPA - there may be someone local.drm wrote:I don't have INPA - I have a C110 scanner that showed up the error code - I don't think it will have this functionality

Re: ABS error code - speed sensor required ?
Yes will do also just having a look at INPA and might try to get this going

Where do you get it from?
Re: ABS error code - speed sensor required ?
Not sure myself but from a quick google search it looks like it is software you download to your laptop

Re: ABS error code - speed sensor required ?
I have one of those BM Cables it is excellent. All sorts of useful data pops up on the screen.
Be aware that you will also need an adaptor cable from the rectangular OBDII connector to the circular pacman connector under the bonnet to read any codes other than the engine related ones but presumably if you are already reading codes with a scanner then you have one to hand.

Re: ABS error code - speed sensor required ?
you need this version with the round adaptor for under bonnet connection.

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..

Yes I have the round adapter for under the bonnet
Just checking if the software will be ok for my car - it says BMW Z Models E85 & E52
I have a 1.9 2001 model

Yes, it does not specifically mention E36/7 Z3 but I can access all modules on my 2000 2.0l by using a combination of the E46 and E39 tabs.
