Brake lights suddenly not working and fuel gauge also stoppe
Hi,
As title says. I changed the fuse for my brake lights and that fixed it for one go. Now chnaging the fuse to a new one won't even let it work once....
Also, while this is happening my fuel gauge and I'm pretty sure my temp gauge seem to have also stopped working. When I change the fuse for my brake lights the petrol gauge starts for working for about 30 seconds then dropps off
Please help!
Thanks

does the fuel gauge work if you replace fuse and not try the brake light?

Try getting a can of electrical contact cleaner... it comes as a spray. Give the fuse box connectors a good clean, maybe that might do the trick.
Re: Brake lights suddenly not working and fuel gauge also st
sorry for my late reply.
The fuel gauge does work until I press the brake pedal then it blows the fuse.
I am thinking (after a few tests) that it may be the brake pedal switch.
I have a 1997 1.9 Z3 roadster and was just wondering whether anyone knew which one I should buy as I have seen there are a number of different ones.
Thanks everyone

If you go to realoem.com and put in your vin number, it will give you part numbers specific to your car.

you have a short to earth in your braking circuit, no point in spending on parts till you find it, try looping the brake switch out and see if it still blows, if not then its the switch, if yes it is further down the line, sometimes water gets into the 3rd brake light. if the switch is ok then unplug all the rear brake light and plug one at a time back in and try each one.

Just wondering if it is the favourite cable failure at the boot hinge.
Re: Brake lights suddenly not working and fuel gauge also st
That was going to be my suggestion as well. The "loom of doom" of course carries wiring for the high-level brakelight, so a couple of frayed wires here could easily cause a short to earth.Zed Free wrote:Just wondering if it is the favourite cable failure at the boot hinge.

loom of doom not heard that before. a frayed wire sounds more promising than water in the high level light

Thanks for everyone for the replies.
I have disconnected all the brake lights completely, put a new fuse in and tried again. As soon as I push the brake pedal the fuse blows.
I have checked the rear earths etc and everything seems to be fine so I have ordered a brake switch and hopefully that will arrive tomorrow!
Thanks

Have you tried with the boot open, That may just disturb the cables enough proving if the fault is there

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..

Have a look at this thread - it will give you some insight into the Loom of Doom:

When you say that you have disconnected the brake lights do you mean taking the bulb out or taking the wire off the back? Neither of which will overcome the short at the loom of doom. I am not sure that the switch will cause this problem as it only has the live there, no earth to short against.

The question which comes to mind is, has anyone else had the boot loom problem combined with the fuel gauge issue, and if not then is it likely to be a fault there ?
Re: Brake lights suddenly not working and fuel gauge also st
I don't think there is anything more complicated to that than that they share the same fuse (46 according to the ETM I'm looking at). The brake lights pop the fuse and the fuel gauge then has no supply, so reads zero.Southernboy wrote:The question which comes to mind is, has anyone else had the boot loom problem combined with the fuel gauge issue, and if not then is it likely to be a fault there ?
