Gear Knob Wiring?

Post by Lancsbob »

I noticed the M type gear knob on my newly bought 2.2 was loose so i investigated
and found it just pulled off but there where bare wires hanging from it which shocked
me a bit, they disappeared into the lever gaitor. I'm hoping that they were just to try
and fix the knob & don't have any function as i can't think what they can do. Anyone any ideas
before i try to remedy the loose knob. How is the knob supposed to fit as there seems to
be no thread just a slot across the top of the plain lever.

It may be a lighted knob, possibly. The knob is just a push fit. Perhaps you could post photos of your knob?

Snigger.

After Googling i now find that indeed some Z3's do have illuminated
gear lever knobs. So now i am worried as the wires were badly cut
& had lots of bare wiring, just hoping that it has been disconnected. :(

They are just a push fit. The slot presumably stops it rotating. Sounds like yours should glow in the dark but that years of chafing have damaged it.

You could test the bulb with a 9v battery. If it works either rewire it or insulate the existing wiring.

Or it was fitted as a replacement and never connected.

The headlight switch and gear knob run off the same fuse I found this out the hard way a few years ago.

If it's an Illuminated knob, There's a retofit loom you can buy and wire it to the dash dimmer switch... No cutting required, Just a T wire that connects to the car loom and into the switch and then runs up into the gear knob.

I fitted one to my E36. 8-)
