That's cheaper than Wilko oil that I put in me old van! Will have a look, not for the Zed of course though! Used to use Unipart 20/50 oil which was a good enough price to change every 3,000 miles. I see Halfords oil is only 4 litres though, another of todays subtle cons akin to selling watered down anti-freeze sold as 'ready to use', buy a litre and your only getting half a litre. :shrug

Research reveals that Comma make Halfords branded oils.
Nothing wrong with Comma products, I have used them in my vehicles.

I've used it in my Z3 for a few years now, meaning that I can change the oil every year, even if I've only done a few thousand miles without a large cost. :D

I always use Halfords (comma) oil and have noticed that Halfords do this promotion at least once a year so l always buy some for both my cars when the offer runs and put it aside for their next oil change.

My Z3 is garaged over the winter months and at these prices it's a no brainer to do an oil change once a year just for the 6 months of occasional weekend motoring ahead. l generally flush the engine and replace the oil and filter just before l put the car into storage so there's no nasties doing nasty things to the engine and seals whilst the car lays dormant.

I'd like to hear peoples thoughts on different oils.

I've always wondered how much actual difference there is between cheap oil and the likes of the expensive ones such as Mobil one.

The thing is, using the wrong oil, or an in efficient one, does it's damage very slowly. It maybe years before any symptoms arise.

I know the VW PD engines eventually wear/fail if the incorrect oil is used.

I've always bought the expensive stuff for all my cars, am I just a mug?

I use any of the oils that BMW recommend. The only oil that does not have a commercial equivalent is MTF-1 (manual gearbox oil).

I had a look through those, thank you Pingu.

Interesting bit near the end, states :-

"All engines of the BMW Group are designed in such a way that no oil additives are necessary if modern, high- quality engine oils are used"

I note the words "high quality".

Eurocarparts currently have their triple qx 5w40 fully synthetic oil on offer, buy one get one free on the 5l tubs.

Works out at £19.43 for 10 litres, which is a much better deal than the current halfords offer.

Just been and bought some 5/40 Halfords oil, as the general consensus is that it is actually comma I may well get another to use in the zed. Interestingly it appears to be packaged as 5 litres now, is the 4 litre ones old stock with the date on it being June 2015? perhaps it's just a stock clearance offer to shift the ageing stock? It's got the latest API SM classification however. I know a petrol tanker driver who told me the fuel all comes from the same pot, it's just the different additives that go in that differentiates between supermarket fuel and major brand suppliers, is this the same between Halfords oil and Comma branded oil?

I know that Halfords reduce their oil about twicea year, maybe it's just like any other shop if they reduce the price of oil, hopefully you may buy other items while in their shop?

Regarding the Halfords oil, if you click on the view data sheet link on the product page of their web site it reveals a Comma Oil data sheet.

I would hazard a guess that the oil is no different to their own branded product.

Bentley Boy you may have had a bargin with the 5 litre can as its not in their offer only the 4 lite packs, maybe a branch cock up?

Even if Halfords oil is 5 litres for £12. Its still dearer than euro car parts which is 10 litres for £19, even worse if it costs £24 for 8 litres...

euro car parts fully synth is BMW LL spec

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..

Can't see anything on their website. Is it just a local offer?

It was a special offer email - it's worth signing up for their emails.

It is still available everywhere, although the code doesn't appear on the website. Add one 5L tub to the basket and enter the code FREEOIL2 into the promo code box and it will add another 5L tub FOC.
