Z3 uneven ride height

Post by caseydobie »

Hi,

Wondering if anyone has any ideas on a weird issue I have with my 2000 3.0 Z3

I jacked up the rear of the car to remove the passenger side rear wheel and access the brake callipers for a bit of clean up. Used the subframe to lift and then axel stand under the jacking point.

Did what I needed to do, replaced the wheel then lowered the car. Now it sits nearly 2 inches higher on the passenger side!!?? the drivers side is correct so it's not like that dropped.

For some bizarre reason the passenger side has lifted!

The shock doesn't appear to be stuck as it bounces fine.

Anyone have any ideas how this can happen? I can't see anything obvious.

Thanks in advance.

I assume you've moved the car since you jacked it up, to allow the suspension to settle? And that it's on a dead-level surface?

Hi BladeRunner. Good point. No I haven't. To be honest it never occurred to me that that would make such difference. I'll have to try it. It's sitting on the drive which is pretty much level.
Thanks

Check the shocks on both sides - firstly that they are a matching pair, and secondly that they are both operating 100%.

When you jack it up the tyre will settle in a different position/angle than when the car is being driven. A simple roll back out of the garage should be enough for it to find its correct position. Only worry if after that, if it still doesn't look right.

you will find just taking off the handbrake will make it drop/.
If you jacked it up with the handbrake on when it is lowered again the wheel locks the supension in the raised position. thats all

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..
