Still no power...3.0
Still no power...3.0
Went out in my Z3 3.0 at the weekend and it feels about as fast as my friend's 2003 1.8 MX5. It runs fine with perfect idle and no hesitation, misfire, or rattle from the front of the engine.
Can the VANOS be faulty and not rattle or give any other running issues?

Re: Still no power...3.0
Possibly the DISA valve not doing it's job? Have you checked the error codes?
2001 Z3 2.2 Topaz Blue (Trudy) - Keeper rebuilt from a write-off
2002 Z3 2.2 Titan Silver (Cookies) - Keeper rebuilt having been bought with a seized engine
2002 Z3 3.0 Sapphire Black (Peanut) - Keeper awaiting rebuilding having been bought as an abandoned project
Plus Willy, Kodak & Maycee - All 2.2 Sport projects. Yes, 6 is a lot of Z3s
Always happy to try and help with spares
Re: Still no power...3.0
Could also be the cam sensor/s failing. needs the codes read to give a better idea.

Re: Still no power...3.0
OK thanks for the replies, l'll have to take it in somewhere or buy a code reader. It's on SORN now so buying one will be the best option. Can anybody advise me which is the cheapest one that will do it?
Re: Still no power...3.0
I use INPA on a laptop but it's not straightforward.
My brother has a Creator C110 which cost about £40. It does the job very nicely and will reset SRS errors too. He uses that on his 1 Series and I borrow it for the Z3s sometimes too as it's so quick and easy.
The port under the dash will give engine error codes only. You will need the version that comes with the additional round head adapter cable to plug in under the bonnet for chassis codes. You should buy that one as it will be useful.

Re: Still no power...3.0
These engines are normally aspirated, relatively simple and generally bullet proof. If the engine seems OK in every respect, I wonder if there is a possible exhaust/restriction issue. Is the cat working OK, does it rattle when nudged with the palm of your hand? If it has broken up with age, there might be a restriction which would hold back performance noticeably for no apparent reason.
Re: Still no power...3.0
I'll have a look at the exhaust system tomorrow.

Can I ask, what is complicated with the INPA on a laptop? I too don't own a code reader as yet and I'm tempted to buy an easy to use one but what does yours do that the Creator c110 doesn't?mrscalex wrote:I use INPA on a laptop but it's not straightforward.

I've just viewed a demo of an ipna on YouTube, I guess you have to be quite savvy on a laptop, but the detailed info is incredible. Battery info and all sorts.!Uncle_Clanger wrote:Can I ask, what is complicated with the INPA on a laptop? INPA is a lot more than simple error code reading. See viewtopic.php?t=35789

Not had a chance to look at it yet.
But l did refit the DISA valve today, after there seemed to be no fault with it.
However on recommendation of my local BMW specialist l fitted a replacement anyway and the car is now back to normal. So whatever that valve is supposed to do, it wasn't doing it.
Surprised that it made so much difference.
