1998 m44 engine z3 check engine light
Hi, I just curious as to what symbol on my dash the check engine light would be...
When i turn the ignition on i have a load of lights on self test... i not sure which is the c.e.l. i have found an error code on my scantool p0340 camshaft sensor fault but i dont get a check engine light... is this normal, or could the bulb be blown or possibly removed...?
have cleared the p0340 fault and it doesnt seem to be re appearing...

Warning lamps are detailed here (pictures from my UK 01/99 M44): viewtopic.php?f=18&t=35657
Symptoms of a failed camshaft sensor can range from a lack of power to the car refusing to run at all.
I did not get a warning light on my dash when the camshaft sensor failed on mine a few years back, but it had logged an error code.
The fault was intermittent on mine, but it was completely undriveable when it occurred. It would start, rev, then die and I had to limp it off the road. It cleared after the AA man had a fiddle with the HT leads, but as it had happened on a busy 4 lane main road with nowhere to pull in safely, which is an experience I'd rather not repeat, so I opted to get it looked at the next day and it had logged a fault code and the sensor was changed.
If the car is driving normally and the code does not come back, then there is no need to do anything.
Cheers R.

Re: 1998 m44 engine z3 check engine light
i had a couple of bad misfires / engine cut outs a few days ago, it was real brief loss of power, but seemed to recover real quickly.... this was when driving normally as though a loss of ignition completely. nothing has shown on dash but my code reader has noted p0340 and i have reset code and mil flag on scantool software, i will take it for a drive later to see if the code reappears... i did drive it briefly yesterday and it seemed ok...
If this re- appears i may remove the inlet manifold and unplug / replug the cam sensor as there may be a loose connection....

As far as I am aware the M44 engine car (as a pre facelift car) was designed under pre-OBD II regulations and doesn't have a "check engine light". It is also why it only has one, pre-cat exhaust lambda sensor. If your diagnostic tool is pointing to your camshaft position sensor - that will be your problem unless your timing chain has skipped a cog which is as likely on these cars as being struck by lightening twice in one day

That is correct, there is no engine management error light on the M44.Del wrote:As far as I am aware the M44 engine car (as a pre facelift car) was designed under pre-OBD II regulations and doesn't have a "check engine light".

Re: 1998 m44 engine z3 check engine light
thanks all...i glad we got that established i dont need to look for one then.... i not tried to see if my code has come back yet.. will do tomorrow...
Re: 1998 m44 engine z3 check engine light
No, that is incorrect, there is an engine management light (the engine symbol), and it is described as such in the manual. However this is NOT the same as the Check Engine light. See my link above. Text is verbatim from my M44 owners manual. I should qualify that the instrument cluster changed in 09/98 (well before the facelift) and mine is the later cluster, so may be different to the early cars.BladeRunner919 wrote:That is correct, there is no engine management error light on the M44.

Edit: Corrected typo in date - it is 09/98 rather than 08/98 as originally posted.

Re: 1998 m44 engine z3 check engine light
I have an 06/98 build M44 and there is no light and the manual makes no reference to one, so the change must have been between June and August of 1998.
Re: 1998 m44 engine z3 check engine light
I know handsomejacks car was built 13 August 1998 so he should have the engine symbol light same as Roberts

Re: 1998 m44 engine z3 check engine light
My production date May 1998 - no check engine light or OBD under-dash socket. To use a trendy description, Z3s must have been "transitioning" during late 1998
Re: 1998 m44 engine z3 check engine light
See my correction above - it is September 1998 that is the date shown on RealOEM/BMWFans for the cluster change. You can tell the difference with the number of self-test mode options - the earlier one has 15, the later 19 - see viewtopic.php?f=18&t=20201
My car does not have the underdash OBDII socket - that came along some time later - either at the facelift or just after.
They were clearly gearing up for the change to OBDII compliant electronics throughout, but they didn't change the switchgear or body panels until the facelift. DSC didn't come in until after the facelift either.
