Still some very low mileage Z3s around
Still some very low mileage Z3s around
I was talking to a fellow Z3 owner the other day who owns a 1998/99 1.9 Z3 which he has owned from new - he's only done 19,000 miles. It only comes out on dry summer days. He was telling me that there was a 2-year waiting list when he bought it
Re: Still some very low mileage Z3s around
There was certainly a waiting list at that time although I'm not sure it was 2 years. My brother bought his Jan 1999 and didn't want to wait for a factory build due to the waiting time. So he asked them for whatever was in stock. That's how he ended up with Boston Green which he likes now but wasn't his first choice at the time.
2001 Z3 2.2 Topaz Blue (Trudy) - Keeper rebuilt from a write-off
2002 Z3 2.2 Titan Silver (Cookies) - Keeper rebuilt having been bought with a seized engine
2002 Z3 3.0 Sapphire Black (Peanut) - Keeper awaiting rebuilding having been bought as an abandoned project
Plus Willy, Kodak & Maycee - All 2.2 Sport projects. Yes, 6 is a lot of Z3s
Always happy to try and help with spares
Re: Still some very low mileage Z3s around
My car was one of the first facelifts and it was ordered and bought as RHD in Germany and then imported to UK, I'm guessing someone saw that as a way to avoid the waiting lists. When I bought it in 2013 it was 14 years old and had 48k miles which I thought was very low (now 60k).. but 19k Del that is very low indeed!

Re: Still some very low mileage Z3s around
I ordered mine in October 1998, it was built in January and on the road here by the end of March 1999. So at that time the waiting time was around 3 months, and 3 months to build and ship. Now on 79,000 miles and used nearly every day, rain or shine!
I'm not sure there was ever a 2 year waiting list, unless you count waiting for them to release the car in the UK. 6 to 9 months perhaps, then 3 months to build and ship across the Atlantic.
Cheers R.

Re: Still some very low mileage Z3s around
There was a waiting list for them, it was getting on for 1 year. A lot of people put a order in for one then sold it on as they were selling for up to £1000 over the list price, as the demand was so great
Re: Still some very low mileage Z3s around
I suspect there are many cherished Z3s "squirreled away". As well as the one above, which is just around the corner from me, there is another owner near to me who has a nice Arctic Silver Z3M - I only knew he had it when I saw the garage door open one day and a Mr Vanos van parked outside

Re: Still some very low mileage Z3s around
Personally, I'd rather have a car that had done 6,000 miles per year from new than a 16 year old car that had only done 9,000 miles.
It would be different if I had a heated showroom where I could add it to my collection .
