Replacement Key
Replacement Key
Lost my spare key.
Just been quoted from BMW Leeds...are you sitting down.... £183 for the key only!!!! £60 to programme it!!!!! I nearly fainted. Any one know of an alternative supplier for a fobbed key? Ive noticed you can get a £40 blank off ebay are they any good?
Cheers

Re: Replacement Key
The trouble with blanks is not only do you need to find someone who will cut it for you, and when I tried very few wanted to know and those that would attempt it offered no guarantee, but a blank key is unlikely to have the transponder to operate your immobiliser so your car will not start.
Unfortunately, for something like a key you have to bite the bullet and pay stealer price. However I would ask a couple of other dealers to quote as I paid less than £120 including VAT a couple of years ago and there was no programming involved. I took the new key out of the packet, it remotely unlocked the car and started it with no fuss.
I suspect that BMW Leeds want to charge top dollar for the key and the extra £60 is to synchronise it with your car (which you could do yourself in 5 minutes!). If they have your car details the key should arrive from BMW ready for use.
Sounds like they are living up to their nickname

Re: Replacement Key
There shouldn't be any programming. As mentioned, they come ready to use, coded to the car.
Re: Replacement Key
I'm in the same situation, only 1 key. I'm going to phone a couple of bmw dealers tomorrow so it will be interesting to see what the prices are!
Re: Replacement Key
I think I`m lucky, I must be one of the few who have all four keys that come with the car when new!!!
Re: Replacement Key
I have the concierge keys and main key but would like a spare fob key, lost it ages ago when having a clear out but over £200 seems like daylight robbery!

Re: Replacement Key
Search "grey service key" on here. This seems to be the cheapest way to get a non-remote key.

Re: Replacement Key
You can't use the cheap keys from ebay as the transponder chip in the BMWs is slightly different [it wont start the car but will open the boot and doors only] if you want a whole new key that is.
The programming he is talking about is probably for the remote central locking. You can search on the web to do that yourself, it is easy.
Get a spare key that does not have the central locking feature, just manual operation and it may set you back about 50 pounds or so. I live in Australia and someone on the forums assisted me getting mine

Re: Replacement Key
i spoke to two local dealers today. both quoted exactly the same price: £181.48 inc VAT with no additional programming required.
i don't think this is too bad. about 5 years ago i got a new key from audi for 'bog-standard' A3 diesel. they took about £250 for the key and 'programming'

Re: Replacement Key
I had this done a couple of weeks ago at a local locksmiths. Cost was £120 for a key, cut, coded & fully working.
It is however, the later 'lozenge' shape key but I wasn't bothered too much about that.

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..
Re: Replacement Key
Nothing new.
l paid £300 ten years ago for two new keys for my Renault van, including the dealer charge to "re code" them to my vehicle.

Re: Replacement Key
Just a thought. Does your house contents insurance cover you for "lost" keys? I'll say no more
Re: Replacement Key

Re: Replacement Key
All the comments about how much other cars cost is completely irrelevant for the poor guy that has lost his BMW key.
Re: Replacement Key
Not completely.
He could sell the Z3 and buy a Ferrari, as the keys are cheaper.
