So yesterday we got a pad warning light on ,its gone off today but i,ve checked all the pads and they are all down to about 7mm so it looks like we are going to need a new set front and back ,have done a bit of searching and it looks like the option,s are just put in new pads genuine ...or replace disc/pads/hoses all in one go ,i used Black Diamond stuff on my Quattro and it always worked well and they do a complete set for the M ,just wondered what people recommend . simon
I'm not sure if you're including the backing plate in that 7mm figure but that's probably over 50% remaining if it doesn't. I think pad warning lights come on around 2 or 3mm.
I would get genuine front discs if they need replacing, about £200 from eurocarparts, a little more from a BMW dealer.
As for pads, I've found Yellowstuff pads ot be fine on mine, these are £116 delivered for all 4 from http://www.ebcbrakesdirect.com/ (prices seem higher than that initially but it discounts the pads and knocks off delivery at the end).
Ferodo DS2500 pads are a good fast road pad too but are much more expensive and give off more dust. Also found them not so great on track.

It could be uneven wear? perhaps the inner pad which houses the sensor has worn down more than the outer pad? the sensors are on the front left and right rear wheels.tuxman wrote:ok no problem bit concerned as to why the light came on then as that is just the pad thickness !!!! have checked fluid level and it is ok what else could cause it to come on ???

I've tried yellowstuff pads on my impreza and brill for trackwork, but for daily use they are scary .They needed to be fully warmed to give good bite but found, when in traffic and driving around town that initial bite is none existent.I went for the DS2500's in the end which work well when cold and are fine for spirited driving.c_w wrote:

I wouldnt recommend Black Diamond. My fronts cracked and juddered. Standard M discs are very good and inexpensive.
I have Mintex extreme pads which work well, although a bit dusty.
If you are going to change the pads I would take a close look at the calipers and carriers. They are steel and rust build up can cause the pads to stick a bit causing rub up and premature pad wear. Getting the calipers and carriers stripped and painted, or powder coated is a good move IMO. Take a look at that beauty:

Z3M with a few mods...and a little bit more power
I paid £190 for all 4 discs from my local motor factors. The rears were cheaper than the fronts by a long way. The rears were only about £30 each which is surprising for a large vented disc. They are obviously pattern (non OEM) but seemed good quality and are working fine.
The Mintex pads were about £100 for a car set.

Thanks for the replies Guys ,the light has not come on again so i,m just doing some reserch will strip them over xmas and have alook ,most of the after market disc are more expensive for the rear !!! don,t know why ,to be fair i think she will get on fine with the std disc and pads its only me that gives them some welly
I got my rears from www.brakeparts.co.uk they're £31+vat each (they are handed so need to get a left and a right). Front discs (£32+vat) are a good price on there but they won't be OEM 2-piece spec ("floating").
That's what EuroCarParts sell (in BMW boxes) but usually they are a little cheaper than a dealer, but sometimes dealer prices do fluctuate (I was qutoed £100+vat each disc at BMW), from Eurocarparts it was £10 cheaper, not much differrence but a little difference!!!siwilson wrote:FWIW, I found it cheaper to get genuine BMW floating rotors for the front of my ///M than it was to get them from Eurocarparts!
