Fitting a replacement Fuel Filter to S50

Post by aj2007 »

Can anyone give advice on this job, I know where the filter is and that the flow through it is directional etc.

Is the fuel system only pressurised when the pump is running (i.e. am I going to get and eyeful of fuel when I disconnect)

I assume there is probably a tool to remove the fancy hose clips, do they just pull back towards the rubber hose to free the connection from the filter?

cheers

The clips are funny things as sometimes they just won't budge then all of a sudden release easily; yes they pull back and should pop off. Even if you ran the engine and pulled the fuse for the fuel pump it'll still have some fuel left in and usuually get an arm full when you take the old one off.

Cheers for the tips guys, that guide is really helpful Matt thank you :D

I will get it done when I get brave enough to go out of the lovely warm house into to the cold garage.

Changed this on my S54 last year. Easy peasy - fuel line will not be pressurized (as long as the engine has been off for an hour or two) and the clips just release without any tools. Only bother I had was that my replacement filter didn't have an odd looking silver square thing on the outlet - hard to describe exactly. But anyway, I had to unbolt this from the old filter and screw it onto the new one and it was INCREDIBLY tight. Not sure if the S50 is the same but this bit took me twice as long as the actual filter change!

...ah, think the S50 is simpler by the looks of it...

Looks like the S54 has some kind of return valve or something. But S50 def looks simpler and is just two plain in-line connections.

Thanks again guys for all the great advice, I am going to replace the filter at the weekend.

Apparently that extra bit is the pressure regulator on the S54 model:

The pressure regulator appears to be at the injector rail on S50:

Ok so fitted a replacement fuel filter today, pretty simple job as stated above. Just have something to catch the fuel as the filter canister holds quite a bit.

Interesting thing, bought my 1998 Z3MR with a full BMW service history, the filter canister has the manufactured date stamped on it..........
1997!!!!

A case of out of sight let's not bother I guess, so well worth checking if yours has been replaced.

New Filter and fixing bracket, note direction of fuel flow marked on case

This is one of the fuel line connectors to the filter note black plastic collar which pushes in to release

The connector locks over the ridge shown here

I got Hamish in March of last year. I summer he needed an Inspection II, so I brought him to my local indy. Same issue was discovered. Now replaced, but he had had a full BMW service history up until then by the retailing dealer. :head: Sorry, I meant $tealer.
