Had a black on black Z3M roadster years ago (around the time of the foot and mouth outbreak as I remember driving over disinfected mats with other club members on a New Forrest jaunt ending up at Beaulie car museum), anyone remember that!
Have been looking out for another 'blackie' and now there are two on Pistonheads:

And

Will try to view both at the weekend...the private owner claimed not to know what a vanos was and really didnt know about diff mount probs, I will call the garage today to discuss. Despite the garage car being 10K less miles for similar money I feel more attracted to the private owners car.
Hmmm decision!

Returning To The Fold... But Which Car?
Re: Returning To The Fold... But Which Car?
Nothing in the mileage and its all about condition / how the engine feels.
Just ask them to make sure the engine is cold for you to test drive and take out for at least a 30 min mixed run. You'v had one before so know how they should drive.
The private one with owner for past 7 years does sound appealing.
You won't know until you see them but both with hardtops is a coincidence.
Good luck

What are you looking for when running the engine from cold?
Re: Returning To The Fold... But Which Car?
when an engine is cold its easier to spot starting problems, excessive exhaust smoke and unusual noises.nicks3 wrote:What are you looking for when running the engine from cold?
Blue, excessive white or black smoke can indicate internal oil leaks, head gasket failure or a poorly-tuned engine
You can also test the auto choke to ensure a smooth transition as the engine warms and consistant revs with no "hunting".
Its also easier to check the power steering when cold ie turn the steering wheel from one side to the other; cars with power steering often produce a slight whining sound, but it shouldn’t be excessive. There should be no bumps, screeching or knocking and it should require consistent effort to turn the wheel.
I'm always suspicious when a car I've arranged to test drive has obviously been well warmed up beforehand (eg on a Sunday morning).

What would be the cause of an uneven idle when cold?
