Hi - Anyone using this on their M
I have 8 litres in the garage from my e46 Alpina and seems the obvious choice for the M too but thought I check out what everyone else thinks first.
BTW - I have never seen it this cheap so if your in the market buy some now
cheers

I would rather use 'new' oilchrisp_1 wrote: I have 8 litres in the garage from my e46 Alpina

Z3 1.9 Sport Progress Journal (Wifey's)
I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..
Re: Castrol Edge 10w-60 for BMW M
Yep thats S54 oil only.
I've bought from Opie before and they are very good and always price well.
The price is a little cheaper than I paid last year for a litre from them I think.
The problem with oil is I don't like buying it to store it, it does have a shelf life

So it's good for s54 but not for s50
What would be recommended grade for s50 then - owners manual pretty much useless in that regard, gives either 0w or 10w as cold/lower range but nothing re hot/upper range (its an arrow diagram).

Re: Castrol Edge 10w-60 for BMW M
I'm too interested in what oils best for the S50..
I too have a 5ltr tub of Fuchs Race 5-40/5-30 cant remember which, in the garage that i got with the M. And wondered if I should use it on its next service.. How long is oil good for?

The attached links give the BMW recommendations (as at 2004)...ZZZEMMCO wrote:Have been using it in my S50 since it came into life---says ALL M engines on the Tin!!! so Must be Ok.Just been in for a Service 2 with all the shims and clearances checked---Spot on at 67K---like a New engine the man says!!---Must be all that Nordschleife air being sucked in!!.-----Alpina Turbo using Castrol for 26 years, on KM 123K---must be doing something wrong using That 10-60 Edge stuff -----------
BMW Oil Sheets
According to Enclosure 8 (Special Oils) Castrol TWS Motorsport SAE 10W-60 is approved for the S50, but Castrol Formula RS Racing Syntec SAE 10W-60 is not. Edge is not mentioned (as it was probably not branded as Edge in 2004).
In 2004, Castrol TWS Motorsport SAE 10W-60 and Veedol Synthetic Z SAE 10W-60 were the only oils recommended for the S54. The list of oils for the S50 was much longer (see Enclosures 5, 7 & 8).
If anyone has more recent information from BMW, please let me know.

Re: Castrol Edge 10w-60 for BMW M
Good posts guys:-
Spent a while talking/reading about oil for the s50 today
Bottom line is this subject is full of opinion and brand prejudice, the following is about as accurate an opinion I can formulate in respect of my original post:-
Castrol Edge (10w-60) for BMW M series replaced Castrol TWS (Ten W Sixty ) ie re branded.
Castrol edge (10w-60) for BMW M series is fine for the s50 but being on the heavy/thick side it will reduce fuel consumption, but offers lots of protection on hot/hard use.
'Castrol Edge FST' is the latest version of the Edge range (previously just 'Castrol Edge')
Castrol Edge FST (0w-30) is the standard choice, good for cold winter / summer use with best fuel consumption but maybe a little thin if run hard in hot weather.
Castrol Edge FST (5w-30) is a good upgrade choice if you do drive a bit harder/hotter.
Castrol Edge FST (5w-40) is a good upgrade choice if you do drive a bit harder/hotter still, slightly worse fuel economy / slightly more protection against hot running. (OPIE oils recommendation)
So it's a matter of choice What's right for you may be wrong for someone else.
And hence the reason I'm not mentioning other brands - that's a whole new ball game!!!! Starting with the excellent link provided by Pingu.
Still undecided

Re: Castrol Edge 10w-60 for BMW M
Interesting thread. I use Castrol 10w60 in my S54 and might give it a try in the S50 - Euro car parts currently have a 30% discount code so less than £60.00 for 8 litres delivered

Bad News - Car takes 5.5 litres .

Probably at least 1/2 litre remaining in the sump
