Definitive engine oil choice for Z3M

Post by Strikem »

Hi all,

So a bit of research has thrown up what looks like a number of choices for engine oil:

Fuchs Titan race pro s: 5w40
Castrol edge for M models: 10w60

Any others, or advise where to buy??

Thanks in advance

On my S50 I use 10/60 Edge for M Series. Get it from EuroCarParts with 25% discount.

Castrol work hand-in-hand with BMW in the UK. I would suggest sticking your registration into their oil finder on their UK site and check what their particular recommendation is for your car. My understanding is that the recommendation for the S50 engine is 5W-40 and for the S54 engine 10W-60. The latter is quite thick for a road-use car and in fact Opie Oils have a technical paper suggesting it is rather too thick and unsuitable for many road-use performance cars.

Although a closely guarded secret, F1 cars are thought to use something like 0W-60 but they rev up to 18,000 and obviously produce a lot of heat.

So I decided on the castrol 10w60. And wow what a difference.

Engine is smooth and quiet. Lovely sound. It was only something like 6k since last change but really does make a difference.

Recommend it to anyone for the s50 engine.
