Budget 5w-30 Oil

Post by j.wallace »

Hi all, just a quick one.

I had my oil warning light come on the other day and while I was in Tesco I thought I'd take a look at the car section and found some oil there.

It's Tesco-own brand but said it was fully synthetic 5w-30 for BMWs. It says it meets and exceeds the following requirements:

- SAE 5w/30
- API SM/CF ACEA
- C3
- Low SAPS/Low ash

Can't see anything about LL01/04 ratings anywhere although the label reads "Suitable for high performance, higher mileage petrol and diesel engines on extended service intervals"

Will it be alright to put in my 03' Z4 3.0 (60,000 miles)?

You will get a range of views from this forum. My own view is that it will be perfectly OK, I am currently running with Tesco fully synthetic 5W/40 in my Z3 and it is running beautifully. When I bought it I noticed it came in 2 and 4 litre square shaped containers similar to those used by Castrol – strange that.

I have used it in the past for the 330 and the ///M, for everyday driving I don't see a problem.

I curently have Millers on the shelf.

It's like Tesco beans versus Heinz.

Some would say that both are equally nutritious, others would say "you are what you eat", others would say...

Tesco don't manufacture oil, they simply allow their name to be used and,in turn, their reputation. They wouldn't risk that if the oil wasn't what it says on the tin and likely produced by one of the big names. As long as it's fully synthetic, there won't be a problem.

My jumper is fully synthetic but I wouldn't put it in my engine.

Budget refers to price.Big Oil Brands command a premium vs the Tesco named oil.Doesn't mean the oil is of lesser quality. As already stated, oil meets standards required.

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..

You can put Tesco's petrol in your fuel tank, but the engine won't run aswell and in due course the injectors will clog up and need replacing, because the fuel does not have all the detergents and additives in and if you're really unlucky you'll find it beggars up your Lamda Sensor and then your engine, as recently occured. In other words you get what you pay for.

Cheap Tescos oil, albeit synthetic or otherwise, will not have all the detergents and additives in it and in due course, it will sludge up your engine. Of course if you do not intend to keep the car for any length of time, any oil is better than none.

You will be fine with that oil. You should change oil yearly irrespective of when the oil light comes on. Frequency of change is important to keep the lubricant fresh and free from the effects of condensation and blow-by.

How long since your last oil change?

I've had the car for 6 months now and have only been filling her up with premium fuel (shell v-power and tesco momentum) and castrol edge oil. Problem is I got laid off a month ago and really cannot afford to be giving her premium when I'm on tesco value myself! (bring on the suggestions to get a cheaper car)

It won't be long before I get another position and as soon as I can afford to do it she's back on the good stuff, but surely it can't hurt to run her on budget for a month or two?

Oil was last changed when I bought her in July, she'd just been in for a BMW oil service but I have to admit I'd been a bit throttle-happy which I'm assuming is why she's been drinking a bit more oil.

We've discussed this before but here goes one more time. I live near the Stanlow Oil Refinery and Shell tankers stand in line with the Supermarket tankers. We all agree there's a different fuel mix goes into the different tankers but I'm stuffed if I can see how.My VW Golf actually runs better and gives more mpg on Morrisons diesel which VW tell you not to use because it contains too high a percentage of biofuel.Too many people buy Brands thinking their getting something better.
