Renovo - -what to expect
My hood I don't think has ever been proofed as the car has lived in a garage its whole life.
It now stays outside a bit so thought I would use Renove ultraproofer. Thinking it would make the roof water resistant - ie water would not soak into it, but bead on top. I brushed on most of the 500ml bottle and let it dry, but after todays rain I would say its exactly the same as it was before. Does this sound right? The water just soaks in with no 'waterproofiness'

I did mine with the Autoglym kit, cleaner and proofer last August and the water sheets off the hood and beads a treat, it will soak in eventually with very hard persistant rain but non comes into the cabin. Would rate the Autoglym proofer it does the job, only cock up I made was when I sprayed the proofer on the hood I got some on the windows and doors and was a hell of a job to remove as it dries like varnish :shock

It's the 1st job I did to my ///M using the Renovo stuff. Stopped my little leak where the rain just soaked from just light showers but now the ragtop is as dry a whistle and stood up well to some heavy rain.

Here a pic to show how good the Revo stuff (i think there's no difference between products though) is after a good down pour this afternoon.

Mine doesnt look like that It is what I was expecting though.
Maybe it needs a few applications?
It has never leaked so not the end of the world - just thought it a good idea that the material is not always absorbing the water

Mine is still beading like a ducks back using the Autoglym proofer last August. I have discovered one thing yesterday, I gave the hood a really good hoover with a stiffish brush whilst still damp after shampooing and amazed how much colour has come back. I wonder if the proofer attracts dirt and traps it that normal washing doesn't remove?

Fabric Hood Cleaner and Water Repellant
I have done quite a bit of research on this subject as I am wanting to get my hood back to looking and resisting water as it was when new. First I spoke to BMW who would not recommend any product in the consumer market place; they have their own product which they recommend and it would cost me about £47 for the Cleaning and Repellant 'kit'. I then spoke to an independent retailer who deals mainly in these type of products. Yes, he said Autoglym works well (round about £20 per kit - buy in halfords). Bu7t, he was not surprised that BMW won't recommend anything but their own product. In fact, yhe told me that the Market leader for this type of product is called 'RaggTopp', and American product who supply all the US car manufacturer's and most European, including BMW!! The RaggTopp Fabric Cleaner and Repellant kit would cost mje around £29 and he recommended this product above all others - beats paying BMW £47 for the same product with a BMW logo!! Hope this helps.
The BMW stuff you want is not £47. That is a kit that consists of a load of stuff you don't want - and somehow seems to end up costing more than the sum of its constituent parts - I have it listed in a products brochure somewhere.
The BMW proofer is about £14 and the cleaner £6-8 iirc. The cleaner does seem to work pretty well, but it won't help with fading - I think only the Renovo dye stuff can help with that - they do get dirty though as the fabric seems to absorb dirt, so a good clean does help and it will remove the old proofer - reproofing with the BMW stuff is supposed to be done in the shade and then left in the sun today - so today would be a cracking day to get it done.
If you want part numbers for the BMW stuff, I have previously posted them on here, or I can soon check the bottles in the cupboard, but it sounds like you have got sorted with other products now.
Cheers R.

For info I have just redone my roof. I had proofed with Autoglym when I first got it back in January as had no beading at all before. Was very pleased with the result.
However, some of the hood had faded (especially over the support bars) and there is a little wear on one side. I was toying with the idea of a new hood but can't justify as the wear is not bad and the roof basically sound and will last another few years. But the faded bits were beginning to bug me.
I didn't fancy going the "painted" route so picked up on an idea someone had posted on here ie using suede shoe die (mine is a blue roof). I thought what the hell sounds easier to do and if its no good I can "paint" it.
I bought 4 spray cans of blue suede colour for £10 (telling the guy at the shoe shop I didn't have blue suede shoes )
I masked off the roof which was the time consuming part and sprayed on the cans. 4 cans were perfect for 2 coats. I used a piece of paper towels to "even out" the sprayed on colour and the results are ace. I was really surprised with the difference it had made, the colour match was great and the roof looks like new with no patchiness at all
I was then going to buy some more autoglym proofer but remembered I had some tent proofer already. I thought what the hell I'll give it a go. I brushed the stuff on generously (leaving the masking on so did not get onto paintwork) and gave it 2 coats. The stuff dried really quickly but left a "silver" deposit on the surface. Oh dear but to my surprise a wipe over with a damp cloth and the hood looks fantastic I tested it with a jug of water and it literally jumped off the roof, there was no beading becuase there was no water left on
I left the car out at my girlfriends last night and after overnight rain the car body had beads of water on but the roof was bone dry. Its even better than the autoglym.
The test will now be how long both the colour and proofing last but if its lasts through this summer I will be well chuffed
(just got to fit my new rear window now )

Renovo also do a black die (and other colours) http://www.renovointernational.com/products/reviver.php which I have used. The finish is like new. Follow this with two coats of proofer and you have a as new roof.

Just done mine today with the Auto Glym kit and am very impressed with the results.. although to be fair - my hood is relatively new (Oct 08) and is in good shape anyway.. just thought it would be better to clean and treat it now while the weather is nice! - If I get a chance it'll be the glass and the interior tomorrow!
