Removing centre dash / facia? Carbon skin replacement?
Removing centre dash / facia? Carbon skin replacement?
Hi all,
Is there a how to guide for removing the facia behind the dials and gear knob area.
I want to skin it with carbon fibre. Not the 3M di-noc material, but real carbon fibre. Has anyone done this??
This is the material I'm thinking of using:

It has a high gloss finish?!!

you mean like this?

That's the one. Has that been skinned?!? Ie covered with real carbon. Or is it a replacement part!?
I might just do the facia with the radio/ dials and the gear surround.

If you decide to DIY...you will need to strip off the "foam" type stuff that has been applied to the handbrake section. It's a real PITA, took me an hour or two. I also did the rear center storage box, so it is a continuos image from back there to the section wich finishes as the surround for the head unit. I did the actual part under the handbrake gaitor too, which is curved...now that was a pain to strip. It's a cool mod, but it may be a little "dated" as I think the fad will die out sooner vs later. At which time I'll probably go for some fine stitched leather...Good luck with you project..

Cool thanks for that.
I'm only going to do the gear gaitor area and behind the stereo area and leave it at that.
Do you have any pictures of yours?? Or is the red one here yours??
Did you cover it with real carbon fibre? Ie the pre glossed finished sheets?? Or did you apply raw carbon sheet and then resin it?
Any advice on removing the parts would be useful
Regards

That's my car...I had someone else to do it...I just did the stripping and removing the faux keathery stuff. Removing the center console is detailed in the Z3 Knowledgebase...

Has anyone tried that stuff being sold on Ebay for about £40.00? It comes in various colours including 'look-alike' carbon fibre, chrome and 'brushed aluminium'. Apparently it comes from Germany. It looks good but is it?
