Alloy Repair/Refurbishment
Alloy Repair/Refurbishment
I know there aren't many on here from down the "Valleys" area, but I've just put my 78's in to be refurbished.
Quoted a whopping £140! including acid dip, sand blasting, undercoat, bake and clearcoat.
The company is a straight up powder coater originally and now they refurb wheels as a sideline. I will be posting before and after shots once I get them back on Friday next week

I hope that isn't £140 each wheel

Re: Alloy Repair/Refurbishment
Nice job and colour. I do see a slight issue though. They have painted the mating surface that goes against the hub and the seats for the bolts. Ideally you want these clear of paint like they were originally. The paint between wheel and hub can lead to wheel wobble and pain on the bolt seats can cause the bolt to loosen. Your refurb guy may say this is OK, but there is a reason they were not painted there to begin with.

Re: Alloy Repair/Refurbishment
A block of wood and some fine paper will take it off without too much effort... I think the main reason why it wasn't OEM painted is the heat generated in braking might turn the paint into glue, or worse still cause a fire if it got really hot as under racing conditions.

Re: Alloy Repair/Refurbishment
Which company was this? was it £35 per wheel?
Re: Alloy Repair/Refurbishment
I'm not sure how active zed-dan is on the forums at the moment. But I asked him this question myself a while back and I hope he won't mind me sharing the answer on his behalf.

They actually advertise on their web site from £20 per wheel!
I did email an enquiry but they never replied. If anyone talks to them or does business with them I'd be very interested to know. I'd like to try them myself although I'm not clear if such a company would repair any kerbing/scuffs/damage or just powder coat what they receive?

If you're in South Wales this guy in Swansea has got a big reputation and following.

If you google him you'll see lots of very positive comments.
He'd certainly do a full refurb. I'm not convinced with these powder coaters they do any more than strip and paint. At £35 per wheel I'd love to be proved wrong!
From the little I've seen mentioned of APS's prices he would be nearer £60-£70 per wheel. But I still think that's okay for a top quality refurb.
