Cleaning up BMW tool kit

Post by mrscalex »

Courtesy of an historical boot leak my tool kit has gone rusty.

Is there a lovely chemical that will remove the rust without the need to repaint?

Thanks.

Use Coca Cola and kitchen aluminium foil and some elbow grease for a cheap method. Alternate is Mother's Metal polish or Autosol Metal polish - they both work extremely well at removing surface rust of polished metal surfaces. For pained surfaces like the jack, best is a chemical rust remover and then Hammerite paint. There's a Hammerite Smooth Direct to Rust product which will work very well if you don't get all the rust out of nooks etc.

Thanks. Definitely a job to subcontract to the kids I think (lad 12 & girl 17). They actually like cleaning stuff. The lad did an excellent job of removing years worth of build up from the alloys and polishing out a number of scratches on the panels. His little fingers were also excellent for feeding the boot lid loom back in :)

Comments are appreciated. I'm not being lazy saying I don't want to repaint. I just like keeping everything as original as possible :)
