Mirror...oh..mirror tel me.....?

Post by Cloz »

What do you think?
The left one:

the right one:

I have installed my news mirrors last week and there is a problem with the left one. It is not broken but he is not the same shape than the right one. A garage painted both of them and when I have installed them, they looked ok. When I took the road at the maximum exterior adjustment I was looking inside the car. I have returned to the paint shop. To place the left at the same angle than the right one they had to drill a hole in the door and even then it is still not at the same angle than the right one.
I have returned yesterday at paint shop to try to find what was wrong. The holes in the mirror, the mirrors it self or the door. If you look very fast they look the same but if you look closely the base of the left one is thicker or higher than the right one. I think I have two different mirrors.
I don't know on which car the left mirror goes but it is not on my car.
Is there is different M mirrors?
I don't know what to .
Thank you,

C

Could it be something simple like the left base with the right mirror and vice versa?

It cannot be done switching bases and I tough turning the mirror 180 deg. to see if I was on the wrong way but the back of the base is larger than the front :head:

Just so that I could see them together. Definitely something strange. :puzzle:

The base looks to be wrong on image picture049rn.jpg. Has someone swapped the correct M base for a standard base?

Just a thought :|

The right one is fitting in the original holes but the left one we had to drill a hole underneath the original hole (back) to get almost the same angle than the right one. Even then the angle of the mirror plate is not going far enough.

I have looked to the BMW parts listing and the number of the M mirrors from 1998 to 2002 is the same so there is only one mirrors made for ZM3.
One on each side :D

Hi Cloz :wave
Just a couple of thoughts:
I'm wondering whether the bases for LH drive and RH drive cars are different to cater for the opposite view points.
It's hard to tell because of the shadow in the 2nd picture, but the whole shape seems different.

This is so strange, just to be clear, I sold these to Cloz from the same stock as many other forum members purchased from me. They are definitely 100% genuine OEM BMW Z3M Mirrors.

My only thought is that they can't be fitted to a LHD? I don't really understand why though.

Does anyone else have a photo of each side from the same angle as Cloz has posted? Especially anyone who bought a pair from me?

Thanks everyone and Cloz, we will get there mate!

That make sens but I still don't know why the holes on the left door (RHD)would be different. And why the two bases are different. :puzzle: :shrug

I went this afternoon to BMW to get a new seal for the third light and the guy at the services told me to sit in the passenger seat and look to the left mirror. He was at the right angle.
So clearly I have a set of Right Hand Kit

Thank everybody

That's a first I've heard of different mirror sets for LHD and RHD cars! Sorry to hear you've ended up with the wrong set for your car Cloz but at least the rest of us have all learned something new!

I went to bed less stupid yesterday :D
I still need new mirrors tough but the good thing, and many thanks to him, spurs fan in a coupe has offered me full refund.
It's just the problem that is causing me at a moment that I need to get out and enjoy.
When you are loosing half of your hand in work accident, a mirrors problem is no big deal.
Thanks for your replies

Happened to be looking at the car head on and noticed the standard (non M)mirrors are also angled/slant slightly differently between the drivers side (RHD) and passenger side on left side - you would not notice it if not looking head on and comparing each one, but it def is angled differently!

Cloz,

I may be too late, but before you get a refund I could trade with you - I've ended up with a set of LHD mirrors I've just had painted and fitted to my RHD car! D'oh! What's more they are even in Montreal Blue!

If you haven't yet got your mirrors refunded by spurs fan, PM me and we can trade, otherwise I'm happy to sell you mine and buy the RHD's from spurs fan!

Hi Cloz,

No worries I'm going to buy them from Spurs Fan - if you still need mirrors I'll have a free set of LHD soon!
