Re: My 2.8 Alpine White III Eaton M62 build
...pleasure...I also questioned the requirement for different injectors given that you'll be force feeding extra air into the system...his reply was that you would need a re-map to increase the time that the injectors remain open, and that should suffice, or if you fit injectors that deliver larger volumes, then you must simply ensure that the injector resistance is the same as the OEM injector resistances. (12 -14 OHMS).
Re: My 2.8 Alpine White III Eaton M62 build
Thanks that was going to be one of my next questions. How mapable are the bmw ecu's? I thought I may have to go piggyback or standalone. So it may just be a case of duration time or possibly bigger injectors? Also while we're on the topic do you know anything about fuel pressure regulators? I presume I'd need a rising rate one but not really sure tbh?
I'm fine with the mechanical side bolting things on making brackets etc but not sure on the fuelling side of things.

Re: My 2.8 Alpine White III Eaton M62 build
If you're retaining the existing injectors a remap is sufficient...this will automatically increase the volume of fuel injected as you increase speed...the fuel pressure as it exists will be sufficient...it's only the "open" / "close" operation of the injectors that will be changing.
If you're delivering larger volume by changing injectors..then you may need an auxilliary fuel pump to provide a bit more pressure...I will ask him about this and if it will be needed, although I imagine if it's a larger volume injector...it can be managed by the ECU by adjusting it's ope / close time as well..I'll get back to you.
Where are you planning to mount the blower?

Re: My 2.8 Alpine White III Eaton M62 build
Thanks again. The blower will be mounted just above the power steering pump near the inlet manifold. Still waiting to receive it so I can get on with making the mounting bracket.
Will the fuel regulator not throw a wobbly when boost is added?

Re: My 2.8 Alpine White III Eaton M62 build
Fuel input is controlled by the ECU...it tells the injectors to open and close...beyond that the timing is determined by entities like the cam position sensor etc etc which all feed into the ECU..fuel regulation is part of the ecu's function.
That's why there is a fuel return hose on these cars...any unused fuel is returned to the tank...

Re: My 2.8 Alpine White III Eaton M62 build
Ok I'm with ya just needed someone to explain it in English for me. If just a remap is all it needs then it'll be a fairly cheap mod for the horsepower added. Might start making a few kits
I was thinking new fuel reg, injectors and a standalone management, looks like I might be saving a few pennies then.

Re: My 2.8 Alpine White III Eaton M62 build
Got a bit of work done on the pulleys. I've converted the electromagnetic clutch by drilling and tapping some holes to make it direct drive. Also the lower pulley which is going to drive the PAS and supercharger has had the harmonic balancer removed and been machined down. I now just have to make a new plate for the centre so it's the right offset to marry upto the existing pulley mount.
Charger with pulley converted to direct drive
Harmonic balancer removed
Pulley machined down
Pulley centre to replicate for PAS pump

Cool beans! You'll need to keep notes with specifications measurements etc etc so you can provide a detailed write-up on the procedures / modifications etc. That way you can provide a complete step by step instruction manual for others to do the mod in future...
Re: My 2.8 Alpine White III Eaton M62 build
Yeah I'll make sure I keep all dimensions for any brackets and pieces I make I tried looking everywhere for a guide which there's a couple but no details or any that show a finished article so looks like I've gotta do it

Re: My 2.8 Alpine White III Eaton M62 build
Bit more progress today got the bottom pulley done!
These are the dimensions for the 3mm spacer plate 48mm radius for the inner cut out and 65mm radius for the outer.
And the dimensions for the mounting plate 5mm
Same outer radius of 65mm
Centre hole of 30mm to fit on the PAS pump
25mm radius for the 3 mounting bolt holes with 43.5mm between the holes drilled 9mm
56mm radius for the outer bolts to mount plates to the pulley with 56mm between holes drilled 6.5mm
Plates next to each other
How they mount in the pulley 3mm shim plate first followed by the mount plate this gives the correct offset to align the belt.
The original belt is long enough to use as the inner pulley is 15mm larger in diameter to the standard pump pulley.
The pulley is being taken to a local engineering firm for balancing.
Next up is the supercharger mounting plate.

Ho!.....loving this thread....
Re: My 2.8 Alpine White III Eaton M62 build
First trial fit of the charger mount just a couple of mods to make and weld a couple of gussets in and we're good to go!
Also ordered a tensioner and wheel last night so can add that when it arrives.

Re: My 2.8 Alpine White III Eaton M62 build
Just about finished the charger bracket now and mounted the tensioner. I just have a couple of support brackets to make and then it's just pipe work
Re: My 2.8 Alpine White III Eaton M62 build

Magic! I think you should have a second bracket made for me...
Re: My 2.8 Alpine White III Eaton M62 build
I can do one if you want once I get this one finalised I'd do a couple of bits differently on the next one.Southernboy wrote:Magic! I think you should have a second bracket made for me...
Ordered a belt today so once I receive the last bits for my m50 manifold I can get her up and running. Can't wait to hear it

Hi Daz3
I'm loving following this thread and your engineering skills.
Are you planning on producing kits after you have installed and tested your car?
I'd be interested in one and have been thinking about supercharging my 2.8 for a while.
Looking forward to seeing the finished article and hearing your feedback.
Keep up the good work.
Regards
Orinoco

Re: My 2.8 Alpine White III Eaton M62 build
Hi from my own experience of running a 293 rear wheel hp AA supercharged 2.8 first thing to upgrade is the fuel pump for a WALBRO 255 FUEL PUMP the best thing i did after the stock 100,000 miles one did not supply the needed fuel for the supercharger and cost me a engine at over a £1000 to change it so for £74 it's a cheap fix also uses a progressive fuel pressure regulator, like a Vortech Standard Fuel Management Unit around £110 and a hour on a rolling road to setup job done so no software remap required, so it's a true DIY install for you

Re: My 2.8 Alpine White III Eaton M62 build
Thanks for that very helpful so all the ecu maps pre boost will not be affected running off standard fuel reg then when boost kicks in the higher rate regulator pulls more fuel through (So only mapping for boost is required?). (Does that sound right?) How do I go about calculating for the right regulator or should I seek the advice of my tuner?
Also will the standard reg take the extra pressure from the up rated pump?
Thanks Daz

no the Vortech Fuel Management Unit dont need a remap on the cars ecu to work for boost thats the idea for the diy set-up
How do I go about calculating for the right regulator or should I seek the advice of my tuner?
The 12:1 FMU is suitable for running with original equipment injectors to maintain an air-to-fuel ratio of approximately 10.8 to 11.5:1 under boost. and using the 255 fuel pump it will provide sufficient flow to deliver the fuel pressure required in proportion to boost under 8-9 psi. you need a fuel management unit for enrichment under boost. The air/fuel ratio must change from 14.7:1 (stoichiometric) naturally aspirated, to about 11.5:1-12.0:1 (rich) under full boost.
Also will the standard reg take the extra pressure from the up rated pump?
yes i run a stock one with no problems

Ok I understand now after a bit more reading up. Do you run a wideband kit to keep check on fuel or just take it on the rollers and see what it's doing?

Bit more done finished the charger bracket along with the supports.
Top one needs to be welded then we're good to go. I can put all my body weight on the mount with just the one support bolted in and it doesn't budge
Had some 35mm stainless spacers made to raise the charger off the bracket.

Still working on it Liam got all the subframes off for powder coating. I strengthened the front one while it was off and will be fitting poly bushes all round! When it's done I'll let u know
Re: My 2.8 Alpine White III Eaton M62 build
Just a bit more of an update picking up the powder coated parts Friday so can get all the running gear back on and built up!
Been busy at work today tig welded pipe work onto the flanges for the supercharger inlet and outlet. Still have to do a bit more to them but need the car back together for that! Welding could be better but I haven't picked up a tig since college about 10years ago so not too shabby
As you can see the inlet had to be formed from a 76mm diameter pipe to a 60 mm x 30mm rectangle. I did this in the fly press then used a mallet to get the rough shape. This was then welded on and ported out to match the inlet on the charger 'ish'

That's going to look like a new car when your done, fantastic work.
Re: My 2.8 Alpine White III Eaton M62 build
Starting to get things back together. Front subframe which was strengthened and steering rack on with new track rod inner and outers. Got the M50 manifold on and started relocating a few bits to fit the charger pipe work in. Also managed to source a vortech FMU and have installed all new fuel lines front to back including pipes on the tank. Also in the process of fitting a wallbro 255 fuel pump will take pics of that later.
Re: Alpine White III 2.8 Eaton M62 build
Got the front end all on and polybushed ready for the wheels including new abs sensors.
Gave the AP coilovers a bit of paint too all fitted with stainless bolts
Next up is the rear just waiting for the fuel tank straps to come back.

looking good....all shiny parts
Re: Alpine White III 2.8 Eaton M62 build
Done a bit more today mounted the charger bracket and started the pipe work to the air filter which needs a couple of mods. The only bit I'm concerned about is the only place I can get the expansion tank is next to the air filter although I'm running an intercooler so can't see it'll matter that much? Does anyone know of a smaller tank I could mount somewhere else if it's a problem? Also took a pic of the diff all pretty
Re: Alpine White III 2.8 Eaton M62 build
Great job, looking forward to the end result. Going to be one serious Zed
Re: Alpine White III 2.8 Eaton M62 build
Looks great, good job. Can you route the air inlet to the front, over or under the charger? Incoming air will be warm where you have it so there is less density and massflow.

Re: Alpine White III 2.8 Eaton M62 build
I'll have a look I probably got a bit big a filter I'm struggling for room everywhere really I've already relocated the pas reservoir and catch tank where the washer bottle was. Failing that I'll run a cold air feed from the bumper to the filter.Deano1712 wrote:Looks great, good job. Can you route the air inlet to the front, over or under the charger?
