How comfortable are your tyres?

Post by thomasbrown92 »

Hello one and all!

I came across these recently while scouring the world wide web:

http://www.astonmartin.com/en/shop/car- ... e-cushions

While I am sure you'll agree that is a lot of money and that there are bound to be cheaper unbranded alternatives available, has anybody had any experience of the tyre cushion?

My car is garaged for the first 14 months of the winter and used May - October so am conscious of the dreaded flat-spotting and the weight of the car sat on the wheel bearings at each corner. I do my best to roll the car back and forth every week, but this can become quite tyring (see what I did there? )

Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Cheers

Tom

HI,

Never seen these and personally I dont worry too much about the car standing for a little while - I know others do and its each to their own. If you want cushions then I would suggest going to a local upholstery factory and buying a couple of big blocks and making your own.

lets face it, even if you can get Very high density at 2-3 inch as shown on the picture, I reckon getting a big block of foam and rolling onto it must do the same trick, even if the foam condenses from 7-8 inches down to 1-2 inch?

The Aston Martin logo on them cost £480....
If you have a look / search on the Engineering workshop websites, they supply a similar rubberised thick mat for lathe / machine operators to stand on. They are designed to "soften" the standing area so the operator's feet aren't under the stress of standing on hard concrete. I'll bet they're considerably cheaper. Because they are designed to provide a fairly large floor area in front of the lathe / machine, one nat will likely give you 4 "wheel cushions" when cut to size...

This type of thing - 3ft x 5ft... Even if you double up on the thickness it's really cheap... :D

........ yes - if you have axle stands - and if you don't mind jacking up and down vs just driving it on...

Well personally I think 2 pairs of axle stands and 10 minutes fitting them would be a hell of a saving on the 612 quid!!

If you follow the link I posted you can see a 3ft x 5ft machinists' mat is only around £25... enough for 4 cushions.... and if you wanted to double the thickness, it'll be just £50...sadly no Aston Martin logo though... :D

Thanks for all of your responses!

I think I will go with something like the doubled-over door mat. It won't make too much of a difference I think, as it only sits through winter.

April can't come quick enough...

Are there any cruises/drives pencilled in around the North in the summer?
