For Sale 1999 2.8 Z3 M52 TU engine

Post by alec.m »

I`ve now got a 3.0i and need to sell my 2.8 that I`ve had for 5 years. It has a full service history, main dealer and Independent BMW specialist. I`ve used Bartley Independent BMW in Southampton for all the work done since I`ve had it. She runs well, uses no oil at all between services and is very quick. No tramlining since I had powerflex purple bushes and Falken Ziex ZE-912 fitted all round. Has a wind deflector. I`ve kept on top of all that`s needed doing and have receipts for all I`ve had done.
Leather heated Z3M seats (very rare). Interesting number plate ends MBW.

New soft top about 8 months ago
New battery a month ago
New front Calipers
New front springs and shocks
Powerflex purple bushes
New Discs and pads all round
New thermostat
New power steering hose (the expensive one!)
Arial grommets
4Falken Ziex 912 tyres with 5.5mm on front and 6mm on rear.
Armrest and cupholder from Southernboy
New flexible hose engine side of Air flow meter
New hand brake and gear lever leather gaitors

Bad points: Usual stone chips and a little rust on the front of the sills. Drivers seat bolster worn.
Wheels could do with a refurb but they`re not too bad. Mileage:122,000

I`m asking £2000 which I think is a fair price. I have lost my off road parking and juggling 2 cars is a pain. Any questions, just ask and I`ll give you an honest answer.

A nice looking car GLWTS but they're Z3M seats not sport seats so get that in your ad as they are much rarer :D

first job was a deep clean inside, then good clean up under hood, boot, inside fuel filler flap etc, looking lot cleaner now in the niggley bits, next job was swap slip ring over from previous wheel I had due to squeaky noise which is very annoying.

Completed this thisevening, however although a tad better, noise is still present. Apparantly under the hood where steering column comes through the bulk head you have to spray grease onto this bearing and it cures a squeak which sounds like its coming from the slip ring area.

Jobs to follow:

Liquid leather repair to drivers seat bolster

Dent technician coming next week to pull the 21 dents Ive counted.

Sort rattle on front brakes

remove and repair mirror bases ( my last Z, these bases were 100% perfect, didn't realise they got so nasty looking haha )

Remove seats and do bush upgrade

Replace gear knob

Do a machine polish / correction on paint.

Touch up odd scrape and stone chips to prevent rusting out

Fit a set of halfords mudflaps

machine polish the headlights to get them looking brighter again

new number plates

That should be it I am hoping.

Accelerator pedal is quite stiff, anyone know a fix? Ive sprayed wd40 onto the spring located above the unit, no joy really.

Really pleased with the way the car performs, goes very well.
Once my list is completed this will be a very sorted motor!!!!

Get your fingers behind the pedal at the bottom where it hinges and check there's no dirt etc hindering the free movement of the hinge point between pedal and carpet. If the car has a bowden cable from pedal to throttle, check the cleanliness around the throttle where the cable attaches and also send some WD40 down the cable sleeve to lube the cable.
I'm sure you're going to enjoy the car - it's a beaut ! :cheers

ok thanks for advice Southern boy.

Right next job solved ( squeaky steering wheel )and took less than 30 seconds to fix.

If when you turn your wheel it sounds like a family of mice, really squeaky, like many I initially suspected it was the steering wheel airbag slip ring. This is not the case. Changed mine out and it was no different. Bit of googling on the e36 forum and advice from a friend and hey presto, advice to spray grease directly onto lower steering rack bearing which exits bulk head in the engine bay. All the posts on e36 forum are based on left hand drive cars so it sounds like a faff to get to!! thankfully our cars have steering wheel on the correct side and its really easy to access. Simply pop hood, and look at the back of engine on drivers side. You will see the rack exit the bulk head. Hit this with spray grease and its perfect!!! no more squeak, andcsteering feels much smoother aswell. Do this as a precautionary item anyhow as it will 100% benefit the steering feel.

Next job haha

Ok so took seat out and repaired drivers bolster:

Seat had an inch tear in leather, this had to be repaired via a patch underneath the leather which is then glued in place.

see below:

hahahaha!! well Its 100% an improvement on the original.

Sad news was, when I removed seat, had a feel under the carpet and yep, you guessed it, damp, needs drying out from old roof !!. I think 90% of these Z's are probably exactly the same. Would recommend anyone check under their carpets. Mine atleast I know wont get in same state as its had a new roof.

Car is also possibly in need of new inner and outer track rod ends

Hopefully its a hangover from the old roof. The pother things to check are the little triangles at the top corners of the windscreen rubber and the waterproof membrane behind the doorcards just to be sure.

door cards and vapour barriers are coming off next week for dent man so will put those right if needs be then.

Checked triangles etc its under the carpets that are wet not tops, just a result of old roof im sure.

For the time being you made me want to clean the wheel. Out came the liquid leather gliptone gt15 gentle leather cleaner.

Im amazed at the results with just a cotton cloth, shiny film completely gone, back to a lovely matte finish, the cloth is shocking the amount of black dirt that came off it. Wheel feels much nicer now, see results below:

Very impressive work and well worth it! As you would have found out, that carpet underlay is seriously thick 1.5" - 2" in places and with a constant window leak will become totally saturated. However the carpet itself seems dry on top, but check out what's lurking further down...........as I found out pre new soft top!

I have steering wheel jealously. I did mine today with cheap Simonez leather cleaning tissues and Autoglym leather balm. It came up good but not as good as yours.

I'll have to buy some of that Gliptone stuff.

Ok, so a terrible few weeks. Ended up writing my brand new Mercedes off in bad fog. So now have to sell the Z3 to put funds towards another family car. Sad to say but this car is now back up for sale, if anyone wants it, it will be £2600 now, to cover all my costs so far on this car, still very cheap for such a car with brand new roof etc and the Z3M seats.

Please pm me if interested. Many thanks

Really sorry to hear that. I hope you're okay even if the car isn't. That must have been a heck of a smack to write-off a brand new Merc. The weather can be so different and dangerous in Wales.
