Without going out to the car to check I think you should be able to find them by looking into the front of the car with the bonnet up beyond the power steering cooling loop pipe, you may be able to get a spanner on the single fixing bolt through there as well.

Yes they are easy enough to get at. However...

The mounting brackets can rot and removing the horn may be enough to snap it off completely. I don't think the bracket is available separately. So if buying second-hand get a part with the bracket.

According to realoem the horns (low and high pitch) are unique to the Z3 and are different between facelift and pre-facelift.

There aren't many Z3 horns on ebay but there are plenty of E36 3 Series which I struggle to believe are that different if at all. Here's a pair of E36 3 Series for £7 incl. postage with make offer.

Plus Willy, Kodak & Maycee - All 2.2 Sport projects. Yes, 6 is a lot of Z3s :)
Always happy to try and help with spares :)

If the horn and bracket are one part, then I would guess that it is the bracket that is unique to the Z3, hence it will have a different part number.

No idea why they would change at the facelift, unless to bring it in line with other models. Front end of the car didn't change, so again might just be the bracket.

Here is a link to the parts, on my facelift 1999 1.8
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showpar ... Id=61_0956

Horn plus mounting bracket is shown in diagram but mounting bracket is greyed out No 4 and not listed so not used on my car, looks like it was dropped from my build and just used the straight horn mounting bar attached to the horn itself.
Same for pre facelift car belonging to a friend.

Just had a quick look on BMWFans. There are two alternative manufacturers for horns, Fiamm and Hella, each of which produces a low and a high pitch, with slightly different frequencies +/- 10Hz. The part numbers are the same pre- and post-faceflift. The Hella horns were only used on Z3s. The Fiamm ones on both the Z3 and the E34 5-series.

See M44 1.9 01/99 and M43 1.8i 01/00.

There is an integral bracket on the horn. The separate bracket shown on the diagrams is not used on the Z3 - this is typical of diagrams that are re-used by BMW - the E36 3-series uses the same diagram, though it doesn't use the bracket either.

Cheers R.

The bracket is used on at least some models as I have it fitted on my 1998 M Coupe, it attaches to the front bumper shock absorber and the two separate horns are bolted to it.
You can access the horns if you remove the drivers headlight (RHD) or via the front wheel arch which requires the liner to be removed or part removed both ways in theory should
be straight forward but rusty fittings and brittle plastics on these cars can make for a different story.
