Weather seals rear wings

Post by dazthephot »

Hi all. Just wondering where the water is coming from after a problem with the tilt sensor. Should there be a mastic sealant in these joins?

I don't think any of the joints have mastic, as they're bolt-on wings. That area is outside the 'dry' area of the boot - if you look at where the boot rubber seal meets the boot aperture, then aything outside that is ok to get wet. Any water in the area you are looking at will drain away, but has no route into the boot. The only real possibilities are the 3rd brakelight, aerial grommet or (rarely) the seal where the bottom of the roof meets the bodywork. Almost certainly one of the first two.

Thanks.
I have a new grommet on order. I'll look at the third brake light tomorrow but i'm wondering how water would transfer from the top centre of the boot down through the boot lid to the left side of the car??

It hissed down again last night and sure enough the tilt sensor well had water in it. When the new one comes i think i'll wrap it in a plastic sleeve then fit it as i can't get the bottom drain bung out....if that's what that is of course.

Lots of third brake lights have, as well as a rubber seal, a smear of mastic
around the entire circumference of the lense to stop the exact problem you are describing!

Replaced the aerial body grommet today. Small steps first then of the rain comes in I'll check the third brake light.
Also created a small drain in the rubber grommet under the tilt sensor.
