Latest trauma - bonnet stuck!

Post by dazthephot »

Right I believe this is a nightmare to fix. My bonnet catch is stuck, the near side one. I can't see any way to get at it, has anyone got any ideas?

I think the near side release wire isn't pulling the latch back, can you take the engine shield off and get a long screwdriver in to the pin hole underneath?

Thanks

make a small hook on the end of a piece of garden wire and probe into the catch. I've done this successfully

Get some spray lubricant on it. It could just be seized. The catches need lubricating regularly.

Try getting someone to press down on the bonnet to take a bit of pressure off the latch while you pull the leaver before you try anything drastic.
Apparently the nearside is easier to get to through the grill aperture than the drivers side. Have a read of this post

Great advice thank you all. As soon as I get back from work I'll tackle it, hopefully the missus driving will rattle it loose!

This happens on my car a lot especially not using the catch that often and especially when it's very cold, I did panic at first, as somebody suggested push down bonnet and take pressure off the catch, or just try several times again to open it

Finally got round to this plus a few other jobs.
It was relatively easy as it was the near side latch that was stuck.

I removed the bottom engine shield then I could see the cable. Once I yanked the cable the latch popped.
Once I removed the spring socket things I could see that the cable that comes from the offside to the near side had come off its hook. I put it back on and all was good.
The spring sockets however are either wedged open or shut and no amount of easy spray will free them so I'll have to replace them.
On the list it goes.
