ABS fault unsolvable bricked car

Post by DanHolman »

replaced module- This worked for 6 months.
Light on dash back- 2 weeks till MOT.
Removed pump motor cleaned stuck bush- bench tested and working fine- put back on car- light on dash goes out after 30 secs remains out for 20-30 minutes then comes back on.

only thing I haven't does is code second module to the car.
Suspect failed solder joint in module- No access not repairable.

Unsolvable. Unrepairable.

Bricked car.

It may be of those faults where you may have to bite the bullet and take it in to a dealer/specialist.

Considering how modern the Z3 is, we do well solving most faults ourselves and on this forum (try that with a newer model with its advanced electronics)
But you might just have to hand over your credit card on this occasion.

Suggest a search on this forum under "BBA Reman" who repair these things quite cheaply - common fault (solder joints) on these older BMW ABS pumps - I've seen the figure £200 banded about. :D

When I replaced my ABS pump and controller with one with the same part nos but from an E46 I had to get it recoded to get the ABS light to clear - the ASC cleared itself as it does its own self-test. There are some videos on Youtube, Like This one for DIY solutions.

The bill to repair the system at BMW is £1,900 Inc. labour.(If anyone doubts that I will post a picture of the estimate). That is not a sensible option. I will not be handing over my credit card.

Why not just code the second module to the car? It can be done diy using DIS - I know, because I've done it. I can't tell from your post whether you think the second module is faulty, but second-hand bits for these cars are everywhere.

If you've really given up I'll give you £100 for it.

I will code the second module in DIS. If its solder joints it won't solve it. I have just bought a third module and I'm looking at the BBA Reman website.

£100 quid for the car? That's very generous.

I paid £45 for a secondhand ABS ECU unit, and coded it myself with a £30 Inpa/NCS setup from eBay.
Its easy.

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..

Unfortunately when something module wise or electronic goes wrong with a car that's 15 years old +, many folk can be faced with bills that effectively write the car off especially if a main dealer is involved. There are many BMW specialists that can reasonably diagnose this fault.. Any recommendations for this gent(as I live in France)
Good luck

This is what can happen with modern cars. One of the reasons my daily driver is a Defender 110.
People are often shocked at the repair costs, but it's sadly the way cars are these days. I go to many a customers house where a rot free car under ten years old is languishing on the drive with some fault where the repair cost exceeds the value.
l bought a new Ford Transit Connect van new for £14,000 in 2008.
After about 80,000 miles l started to get running faults which were diagnosed "it needs four new injectors, and possibly a fuel pump"
The quote was well over £2,000. The van was seven years old.
A lot of the dead cars l see are premium models, l think they are designed for a lifetime of ten years.
I didn't know there was a dealer repair quote of nearly two grand!
That's clearly not an option. Maybe a local specialist could look at it?
l hope you find an economical way to get the Z3 back on the road.

I've installed the new module and coded it. The lights are all gone! for now...

Progman wouldn't initialize, then when it did, it would not let me choose the ASC module (might be to do with it being of a E46? However, the codes on the module where an exact match to my old one.

I coded the module in NCS.

Nor I when I had an MG Midget. Loads of other troubles, mind you, but no ABS trouble! My Westfield doesn't give trouble like this either... I don't use it on the road any more anyway - too dangerous thanks.

God help me when/if either/both my 2002 Z or my 2007 X-Type start acting up. :|

Managed to fix my ABS module last week. Removed the control unit, sealed unit so cut the lid off with a Dremel.

2 broken solder joints inside, resoldered. Fitted the lid and sealed with black silicone sealer.

ABS light was still on, drove for 1/4 mile, lights went out and stayed out. Now lights go out every time ignition is switched on.
