On the positive side that brings it down to your budget and its in Nottingham but It will need looking at, depends on your mechanical knowledge or access to - could be a simple fix. - Best I can des...

OK - update - I did a fair bit of driving yesterday (looking for some rear tyres but that's another story!) and had the problem happen a few times. each time I felt it the steering just went really heavy and its definitely as if the power assistance stops assisting. Next time it happens I'll try to ...

Oh, and its possible I'm in denial that its intermittent and that its actually totally stopped (EDIT: I mean that the power steering has totally stopped working, not that the fault has stopped - as I re-read this it didn't sound right!). probably me being stupid but I can't spot the pressure relief valve. Having looked at the exploded diagrams I can't see what else could be at fault. It's mechanical (driven by a v belt as you mention). Quite unusual to go intermittent, when they do it's usually either low fluid or slipping belt. Sounds like you've eliminated both those so I wonder if the pressure relief valve is faulty? Hmmm, is that something I can test? - or perhaps my belt's...

heavy steering / power steering pump?
Hi all, ('98 2.8 105,000miles) I'm experiencing heavy steering intermittently - I'm thinking poss the power steering pump has gone - can anyone help? I've checked the fluid and there's plenty in there and it isn't foaming. I'm worried as its quite dangerous. Is the power steering pump mechanical or ...

Re: ARBs
An interesting point - perhaps the additional body roll permitted by the worn ARB links was permitting the edges of the tyres to assume an angle tothe road surface, and so promote tramlining - that's one I hadn't thought of! I have driven lots of miles with both ARBs disconnected - after a long run...

Re: Tramlining
Far be it from me to contradict you, but after replacing my ARB droplinks, the tramlining I had been experiencing has improved no end - don't know the maths of this but it has!Mike Fishwick wrote:...I doubt if the ARB drop links would induce tramliniing, they would promote a bit of sloppiness in handling.

Headlight height adjusters
Hi all, when I had my MOT I noticed that there's a part of the offside headlight height adjuster missing - so it won't work any more - just wondered if anyone knows if these things are available separate to the headlight or if its a complete unit? - I'll post a pic when I get a mo but for the moment...

Creaking steering wheel - iintermittent when turning it
Hi all, my steering wheel has always 'kind of' rubbed on the trim in some way - I always assumed it was a feature. Unfortunately now it makes quite a creaking sound (still sounds trim-y) when turning to full lock - but not always.... Anyone had any experience of this?? hoping its not something bad....

Anti Roll Bar Drop Links - just replace or upgrade?
Hi all, just failed MOT on a worn bush on the o/s drop link. I'm thinking of just getting a replacement (and doing the n/s too as that's an advisory) but wondered if there's mileage in upgrading. Cost and availability will be an issue though as I'd like to get this MOT sorted (and get back to worryi...

OK, having got in touch with dealer (Sytner) they also tell me there's no LSD on my car. So I bought the oil and a crush washer and changed it. Surprisingly easy. Just go to a dealer and get an options printout for your car - it is a safer bet than listening to a call centre person. The 'turning wheels' trick does not work on mine, although it has a LSD, which seems to be a characteristic of a Torsen diff. Buy your diff oil from Opie Oils of Redrith - see th...

Re: Options
When is an option standard? When it is specified for a specific national market. In other words, a Z3 for some markets will not have an LSD, while a Z3 for another market will. These Standard Options are specified by - in our case - BMW (GB), which is why just about every UK Z3 from September 1998 ...

Re: Lsd
The LSD is shown under 'Standard Options,' as item '0209 Sperrdifferential (25%)' It is important to find out, as use of a non-LSD oil will cause rapid wear to an LSD, while use of an LSD oil in a plain diff will cause drag. A 14 mm hex key is a standard sump plug fitment, and is available form Hal...
