btw, can the slip ring be done by an enthusiastic amateur or do you need specialist tools. I'm fairly accomplished but don't have all the tools in the world!

I tried the ignition off / ignition on thing and there was a difference. So it works - at least some of the time.... the problem is it seems to go heavy on occasions while driving - can anyone think of another reason (aside from power steering) that this might happen? It's mechanical (driven by a v belt as you mention). Quite unusual to go intermittent, when they do it's usually either low fluid or slipping belt. Sounds like you've eliminated both those so I wonder if the pressure relief valve is faulty? Hmmm, is that something I can test? - or perhaps my belt's...

An interesting point - perhaps the additional body roll permitted by the worn ARB links was permitting the edges of the tyres to assume an angle tothe road surface, and so promote tramlining - that's one I hadn't thought of! I have driven lots of miles with both ARBs disconnected - after a long run...

Creaking steering wheel - iintermittent when turning it

Hi all, my steering wheel has always 'kind of' rubbed on the trim in some way - I always assumed it was a feature. Unfortunately now it makes quite a creaking sound (still sounds trim-y) when turning to full lock - but not always.... Anyone had any experience of this?? hoping its not something bad....

top tip - when requesting the options from the dealer, ask for the parts dept, not service..... my mistake when trying to find out about the LSD....

Possibly best to actually go in with your chassis number in hand rather than ring.

Bought the cheap ones from Euro - cash too tight to go mental and any searches I did all pointed at replacing the ARB, which isn't feasible at the mo!

Just been in to Sytner Nottingham, been to the parts desk and the guy took my chassis number, went on the computer and told me it definitely HAS an LSD! so, gonna buy the correct oil from Opie, assuming they can deliver pronto! meanwhile will try not to drive the car, but have her booked in for MOT ...

When is an option standard? When it is specified for a specific national market. In other words, a Z3 for some markets will not have an LSD, while a Z3 for another market will. These Standard Options are specified by - in our case - BMW (GB), which is why just about every UK Z3 from September 1998 ...

Also a bit of advice, before removing the bottom drain plug make sure that you can easily remove the top fill plug otherwise you could end up draining all the diff oil and not be able to get the top fill plug out easily and then be left with a diff that you cannot fill and therefore a car that you ...
