Also check the dipstick is pressed firmly down, mines a 4 pot but if left a little raised it allows air in and makes the engine hunt.

I fitted a new BOSCH S5, capacity 77Ah, cold test current 780A with 5 years warranty early 2011. Yes that worked. A spray of WD40 and a firm yank downwards and out it came. Tyre is quite flat - I didn't realise it can be inflated from the back of the car without removing it. The extension tube which enables inflation can be the reason for deflation as it leaves the tyre valve permanently open....

I have a 1.9 Auto and find it perfectly adequate, I would entirely agree with Tilly's comments having owned and enjoyed mine for around 9 years. Having said that however if "adequate" is not what you are wanting, maybe look for a 2.8 or 3 litre, both of which I think will have a Steptronic...

1.9 M44 engine is known for having a somewhat lumpy idle. I had some weird central locking issues a couple of years back which I found was due to the boot loom (where it goes from lid to body) as Robert suggests.
It looked perfect but on stripping the outer cover back there were a couple of broken wires.

Looking at this the pins look much shorter than on mine.
Just wondering if they have been shortened at some stage as they don't look long enough to reach the mountings.
Apologies if it's just a bad camera angle.

Whilst hearing the noise try gently pulling on the handbrake, if the noise stops it will be the handbrake mechanism as Joycey says.
Speaking from personal experience the rear mounts noise is more noticeable with hood up rather than down.
