1999 BMW Z3 1.9 twin-cam, 97K, FSH
Regretfully selling my 1999 BMW Z3 1.9 twin-cam after 7 fantastic years of ownership. I’m only selling due to an impulse purchase of an American import (!), otherwise I would definitely remain its owner. Finished in Boston Green, it has covered 97,000 miles, has the optional leather seats, the M ste...

Re: New convertible roof questions?
The frame on the drivers side rear looks to be pushing out and creating a larger than normal (compared to my Z3 roof) concave area. Is this just the angle of the photograph, the lighting etc.,? Yes I agree it does look like it's protruding out a little more. Just looked again and it seems fine - co...

I'm not sure of the material. Their website doesn't mention Mohair but it does look like OEM spec.

Re: New convertible roof questions?
Visited Dee at Soft Tops Croydon last week for a new black hood at £575 fitted. Really pleased with it - the hoods are hand made by Dee and are terrific quality. Having a new window makes all the difference too! Fitting time was about 3.5 hours and although I'm hardly the best shopper in the world, ...

Re: Rough Idle, Runs Rich, Overheats a little
Having recently changed my water pump, I agree with the other posts that it's worth looking at. My 1999 M44 engine's original pump had a folded metal impellor (not plastic, even though I believe it was the original), but at 96,000 miles, there was a lot of play in the bearings. The new Mehle pump I ...

Re: Cooling system rebuild + winter update (pics)
Looks like your power steering cooling loop could do with a rub down and repaint, would have been easy whilst it was stripped down for the cooling job. Check! I did this on reassembly, although it was more a wipe down than a repaint. Some corrosion at the top but not too serious. Also cleaned the r...

Cooling system rebuild + winter update (pics)
Haven't posted for a while so thought I'd share some updates on my Z3 with the 1.9 twin-cam M44 engine. I've had it six years this summer, and each November I put it on SORN where it goes into the garage, gets a service and I can make any repairs needed. It passed its MoT yesterday with no advisorie...

Into year 4...
2019 marks my fourth year of Z3 ownership. It's been on SORN over winter, when I did have brief thoughts of selling, but thankfully I recovered and feel much better now! The car passed its MoT earlier this month but with some advisories around an oil leak - I reckon some stray drops from the last se...

Re: How to remove your ABS module
So coding is vital! But you've avoided this issue by paying BBReman. And I have to say £129 is not too unreasonable, especially as I always thought it was around £200. You have something now that should last another 15-20 years. I have something for 25% of the cost but that could keel over again in...

Re: Winter progress + second advisory-free MoT in a row!
If its leaking out of the water pump it would be prudent to change it out for a new one sooner rather than later. Just check its not one of the hoses leaking at a joint, the rubber on our cars is getting rather old now and tend to start leaking, the crimp clips they used to connect hoses often loos...

Re: Solar trickle charger
I use a solar charger both during winter and when the car is parked for a few days in the warmer months. In winter, with the car on SORN, I remove the battery and connect the charger directly to the terminals, leaving the panel in the window to face the sun as much as possible. When connected to the...

Winter progress + second advisory-free MoT in a row!
2017 was a good year for my Z3, or Zed as my two sons call it. After being on SORN through winter, it got its first advisory-free MoT in 7 years so I put it back on the road a bit earlier than before and ran it for 8 months and 2,300 happy, uneventful miles in all. I put it back on SORN at the start...

How to remove your ABS module
Like many Z3 owners, I'd been living with the dreaded yellow ABS/ASC lights on the dashboard for some time. They'd come on intermittently, and then after the pull away self-test would go out for a variable amount of time - sometimes a few miles, other times a few days, before coming back on again. M...

Re: Winter work and (finally!) no more MoT advisories!
Well done, a few jobs ticked off the list. But what about the main one: the weather? All the efforts you put in will only add to the frustration if it keeps on peeing down all the time! Last week I had my first top-down ride of the year, and this week we get 19mm of rain in 2 days. Perhaps we could...

Winter work and (finally!) no more MoT advisories!
Finally got a fresh ticket today after a huge amount of work over winter. Better still, no advisories which was my ultimate aim, although things took a twist on MoT day - see below! For the last two years, I've SORN'd my Zed over winter to get the jobs done in the garage, and this is what I got up t...

Re: Fuel tank Straps
You may be able to repair them with a rust treatment product. I had a similar advisory and used POR21 (I think) which has a rust eater and then black paint. This sorted it and it disappeared from the advisories the following year!

Re: Kwik Fit MOT – ABS & ASC+T lights on like a Christmas tr
Dropped the Z3 off for an MOT today (no warning lights on dash) and get a call later saying that the car had failed owing to some ABS fault. It was alleged that by the tester simply driving the car from the MOT car park to the ramp (about 10 metres) for the emissions test, the ABS & ASC+T light...

Any tips on removing the gearbox filler nut? Access is poor and I couldn't get enough purchase on it to turn when I had a go last winter. In the end, I gave up, worried I'd crack the casing.

I've been meaning to try some Por 15 out myself so was interested to see what you got in your kit, what you paid for it and how it went on. I'd read about POR15 on here, and since I didn't need too much of it, decided to order the starter pack which has small quantities of the degreaser, cleaner an...

Winter work + MoT'd
Been a bit quiet since joining the forum last summer, but after a great few months in 2015 hooning about in my Zed, I SORNed it in November last year to get a few jobs done. The money I'd otherwise have spent on tax has gone into the car instead, securing an MoT pass at the beginning of March - desp...

Anyone else SORN for winter?
After a great first 6 months with my Zed, as planned I've recently put it on SORN for the winter months. We're a three-car household, so as well as a chance to save a bit of cash running it, there are a few jobs (rear brakes and exhaust mainly) that need attention. This is my first BMW and I have to...

Boston Green newbie
Hi everyone, Pleased to join the forum. Collected my Zed a week ago and thoroughly enjoying the experience! It's a 1.9 twin-cam in Boston green with the black leather. Looked at a couple of tatty examples before taking the plunge. This one has done 84k with a stamped history and is pretty good mecha...
