The damper does not have a 'cycle' (where did that come from?). It reacts to suspension movement and (more importantly) the speed of suspension movement. Too many assumptions here. The fact that the spring is allowing the ride height to be lower by 30mm (a tad over an inch) does not require the damper to be shorter. Why should it be when the OEM shocks will cover the complete range of travel of the suspension so any replacement part will do the same....

Er... the track rod end is not the rack ball joint! The track rod end connects the tie bar to the steering arm (bolted to the hub assembly). If there is a gap in your knowledge regarding vehicle terminology it might be useful to search for the part in Ebay. That way you'll get a picture as well! ......

If you're planning to change the track rod ends you may find it quicker/easier etc. to replace the tie bars complete (from the rack to the track rod end). Nothing to do with left hand threads that all mechanics are more than familiar with, the problem is the locking cone that is fitted between the T...

Er... how did you manage to get the door card off when you are unable to open the door??? Very smart! I can only further suggest you check the boot wiring, it is prone to damage through use and can screw up the security. Hope you get it sorted.

My first car was a 1953 Opel Olympia Estate bought in in '58. Ultra rare at the time, can't even find a pic of it today! It hadn't moved for 3 years and I paid the equivalent of £12.50 for it because its space was needed. A real gem and brings back fond memories.

There are two varieties of tie rod (even from OEM), with and without locking tabs. In a perfect world the locking tabs would be included if needed, maybe that's expecting too much. It is always good practise to replace them anyway, I confess I always would. HTH

There sure is some old nonsense doing the rounds of the forums lately. You do not need to remove the track rod end (tie rod etc.) from the steering arm. Just loosen the tie rod lock nut as you suggested and rotate the tie rod. Of course it rotates on the steering rack arm, how else could it possibly...

Hi, this item (Ebay 270427249048 EL Series Multipole Connector) is excellent for the job. There are a number of pin sets available. Always use crimp terminals, never ever solder wiring in a car, and definitely no 'choc blocks'.

If the anti roll bar is under tension when the car is standing on level ground you have a problem. Lowering the suspension makes no difference, the roll bars should be free of tension.

Apart from an increase in castor angle, how is the M suspension different from the non M cars? There is of course a change in the roll bar linkage but that won't alter anything significantly. I don't see any evidence of 'body flex'. It is my belief that that most of the suspension problems are cause...

Hi Alec, camber correction bolts will give you the best part of 3 degrees. BMW part no. is: 07 11 9 900 587. About £3 from BMW. Be sure to fit them yourself (or at the very least, take them with you) to the tracking adjustment shop, they will charge the earth (~£27) if they supply. Ask me how I know...

One other point worthy of note: the radiator drain tap - being plastic - sometimes snaps off because they sometimes get brittle with age. They are not expensive and getting a new one may be good insurance before you start the job (car can be imobilised if it takes time to 'get one in').

An old problem! BMW can supply a retrofit airbag switch pack - but they won't sell it to you! However, they will supply this as a replacement for a 'faulty' switch (which you of course will have). The part numbers for the switch is: 61 31 8 381 043 for 'wood' trim or 61 31 8 379 617 for plastic trim...
