Re: Handbrake service
I'm hoping not actually, just trying to be prepared. I suspect it's that funny link thing that's seized or stuck so i'll just have to strip it and see. Cheers Are you sure you need parts? The drum parking brake has an easy life. I recently looked at my 2000 2 litre 102,000 mile car and it just neede...

Re: Handbrake service
Thanks Rayman, i'll check that link. My car did fail its MOT on the handbrake. The cables were rusted and split and it was a long hard job removing them. Luckily the bolts holding the drum to the hub were not rusty otherwise removal of the drum would be difficult. The back plates can be rusty so if ...

Re: Handbrake service - calliper removal
Thanks. I don't know why i didn't think of it at all as i've been hobby working on cars for years and BMW's especially for a good 20 years. The handbrake really is a bug bear, it's design was probably quite good at first but real world working is different. I suspect it's crap because that funny lit...

Handbrake service - calliper removal
So here's a thing. Next on my list is to service the daft handbrake. I'll also have to do my e91 320 too as it also is rubbish. My Q is why not just remove the calliper carrier bolts and take the hole thing off together to be able to remove the disc instead of removing the calliper first then the ca...

It was actually done at a main dealer. Along with a new water pump, radiator, thermostat after a big overheat. I was told it didn't need a skim but clearly it did. I'll have to weigh up the cost of another HG and skim over a recon engine taking into account of the car's actual market value. Sent fro...

A good maintenance day
Well. Once I'd managed to release the stuck bonnet latch I thought bugger it. I did an oil and filter change, a coolant flush, air filter, serpentine and auxiliary drive belt change. All jobs on an ever increasing list. A good day I think so hopefully the zed gods will reward her indoors with some m...

Coolant flush reveals oil in water.
So I've suspected a dodgy head gasket only because it's been down on power for a while. I did a coolant flush today and noticed a film of oil in the water. It's not in the expansion tank though ??? Strange. I had the head gasket replaced about 8 years ago at bmw when I had an overheat issue. Anyway ...

Re: Latest trauma - bonnet stuck!
Finally got round to this plus a few other jobs. It was relatively easy as it was the near side latch that was stuck. I removed the bottom engine shield then I could see the cable. Once I yanked the cable the latch popped. Once I removed the spring socket things I could see that the cable that comes...

Right I believe this is a nightmare to fix. My bonnet catch is stuck, the near side one. I can't see any way to get at it, has anyone got any ideas? I think the near side release wire isn't pulling the latch back, can you take the engine shield off and get a long screwdriver in to the pin hole under...

It's the wire that goes into the black block connector that's broken and corroded so i thought i could get a replacement female micro pin and dig out the corroded one in the block, then solder the new female pin on to the wire and insert it back into the block. Re: Alarm problems - tilt sensor
Ah balls. Just when I thought all was fixed. A heavy rainfall filled the corner well and set off the alarm again. Therefore it must be the third brake light that's leaking as I've replaced the aerial grommet. I also found a broken corroded wire on the tilt sensor plug so I need to replace that. Anyo...

Thank you for the advice. I bought 12 litres of deionised water from Tesco cos it was only a pound or so for 2.5l. I got 3l of bmw coolant for about £20 from a bmw geezer on fleabay. So I'm ready to go. I'm guessing that you turn the heater dial to hot then put the ignition on and run the fan? Right...

It's a faff but you can get the actuator off the lock without taking the lock out. Perhaps if you get it off you can manually move the centre spigot enough to unlock the door?? Maybe.

Re: Passenger door won't open
It's a real **** to get to but if you can take off the internal door handle then work your arm in to reach the actual lock mechanism you might just be able to push up the arm the links the door pin. Maybe. With the door card prised off as much as you can.

Ok so it's time for a coolant flush and replace.
I want to use distilled water as the good book says but is that really necessary?
I guess if it is I'll have to flush with it too as I've been topping up with tap water over the years.
