I’ve seen various extra letters when looking for oil but have no idea what they mean. What’s the required spec for ours?Gazza wrote:I’m not a brand specific person when it comes to oil.
If it meets the required spec then it’s ok with me.

Re: Eurocarparts
I’ve found oils cheaper than ECP (even with their discount) on eBay Many manufacturers spec their oil, so just looking for 5w/30 isn’t enough. Something that im learning about having wondered about the Dexos 2 that was put in my 320D However my thoughts were about today’s oils being made to a highe...

Oil selection.
This is a divisive topic I know so I’ll keep it light. How different are oils these days? If I put fully synth 5w30 in instead of 5w40 if I buy a brand like Triple QX instead of Castrol what problems will I cause? As I understand it in the most simplistic terms the 5 bit affects cold starting and th...

Here’s something that I didn’t know. It looks like Eurocarparts and Carparts4less are the same company but one is always cheaper than the other at different times. It’s worth checking and pricing the two off each other. Also if you’re looking for non specific things like engine oil if you don’t put ...

Scratch that I’ll answer my own post. Silicon grease is supplied in the repair kit so my high temp grease should be fine for a while.

Re: Basic information for home maintenance ?
The Bentley manuals are more technical and considered the bibles of car maintenance. The Haynes ones aren’t too bad albeit a bit simplistic and general in certain areas especially when it comes to different engine types. I have one for mine but it’s the wrong year, my car is a 1999 but the manual is...

A great source of reference is the realoem site plus you could get yourself a Bentley service manual. Stick your chassis number into the realoem website for oem part numbers for reference if you need.

What’s the school of thought here? I’ve been dealing with a seized brake piston (OSF) and also old stuck slider bolts. I’ve managed to free off the piston and I’ve cleaned and lubed the slider bolts with some high temp grease. It didn’t look like the slider bolts had had any grease on them and the r...

Nobody has mentioned 'thermostat'. They are often the cause of sludge on the oil filler cap. Is the temp gauge getting to the normal centre position after a couple of miles? If not I would certainly suspect the thermostat. Cheap, easy fix. Well I’ve recently dealt with an airlock in the system to f...

A coolant pressure tester is a good tool. There is a tool that works in reverse (it creates a "vacuum") and is used to fill the system. It can also test for leaks, but isn't as good a tester. Ah right thanks I’ll look out for one. I did change the crankcase water hose union and there’s a ...

I don’t see any oily film in the coolant, I flushed it last summer and didn’t notice anything untoward. My opinion, as long as you buy a sensor manufactured by Hella, Bosch or ATE it will work. I have replaced my front wheel sensor, using an ATE, no problem. Re: ABS Sensor readings
I think the sensor showing 1.8kOhm is suspect. Normally it should be around 1 kOhm as you have for the others. If you have a ACS/ABS system type Teves Mk IV, the alarm triggering level is set to 2 kOhm. Another thing you should take in consideration is that the accuracy for multimeters in low ohm a...

To spin the wheel is a very good test, the voltage will just be maybe 0.25- 0.5 volt AC, depends on the tester. As mentioned, check the resistance, I think it should be approximately 1 kOhm. Anyway, the resistance should be almost equal for all four sensors. Be careful when opening the sensor conne...

Ignore the OBDII one. It is only connected to the engine module. The round 20-pin connector under the bonnet is connected to all modules.
