Get rid of them once and for all.
The people who like to post and participate because they enjoy being part of the forum will continue to do so.

The only useful purpose it serves is in determining who is an active member and who is new to the forum. If turning if off will put an end to the petty scoring and seeing who can be king (or queen) of the posting count tree, then please get rid of it.

So long as the total is available in the profile you could remove it from the avitar area.
I find it fascinating that some of our members post so few posts over so many years and yet remain committed and involved members. I always take the time and trouble to read these posts carefully and because I'm new I read all their previous posts as well.

QUIA CUSTODIET CUSTODES IPSOS?
I'm in the I don't care category but I do think it helps when determining if someone is a newbie or not - i guess everyone on here knows the usual crowd anyway but it is a good indicator when dealing with newbies (I remember a case recently when someone with a low post count was asking about how to open a locked boot and somepeople were not sure whether he/she should be helped as they were deemed to be a newbie based on their post count, without the post count or something similar, it may not have been possible) - if removed maybe it can be replaced with the star idea or a title based on number of posts, for example ranging from "Newbie/New Zedder" to "Veteran/Long Time Zedder" or something like that!
I don't care what you say....the opinion of someone with (say) 2000 posts who's been registered for years should have (quite rightly) more clout on this forum than someone who's joined a week ago but has hit (say) 100 posts.
Get rid of the post count....fine....but you need some kind of alternative to show dedication and commitment over time to Zroadster.
Newbies and infrequent visitors need to see whose opinion is presumably considered as respected amongst peers.
And every time I read a post from a new name, I'll look at the post count and date of registration to see if the poster's contribution is really worth my consideration.
If something controversial comes from someone who's joined this week with 10 posts to their name, then they can get stuffed.....I'm seriously not interested.
But if someone who's been registered for yonks and has gained respect on the forum said the same thing, I'd be keen to read and consider their opinion.
You have to earn respect, and post counts is not perfect, but everybody needs some kind of scale to judge how much 'weight' to proportion to a poster's comments.
Don't ask me for the answer, coz after a few Stellas I'm not feeeling that constructive......

Alternatively, we all know of users on a multitude of forums that have hundreds or thousands of posts, yet don't say very much of any substance!Alfie wrote:I don't care what you say....the opinion of someone with (say) 2000 posts who's been registered for years should have (quite rightly) more clout on this forum than someone who's joined a week ago but has hit (say) 100 posts.
It's actually a tricky one. With this particular forum software a reasonable approach would be to assign levels/status based on hidden post counts. Just need to come up with some sensible categories to rank people.
Another option would be a php mod to take the membership period in to the calculation. Not too dificult to do but would require someone's time to develop, dcocument and test it for this and subsequent versions of the software.

I find the post count and joined date particularly useful when looking in the 'Stock Exchange' section. It helps me determine whether someone has just joined the forum to sell something or whether they've been committed to the forum. Maybe it's not perfect but the post count and length of time on the forum does contribute to understanding members' attitude to the forum.

I think "understanding members' attitude to the forum" can be achieved by coming onto the forum, reading and interacting w/o the post tally.

Not if we have an alternate method of designation such as newbie, junior member, senior member etc.....garythefish wrote:There are a few of us who like to give a welcome to the Newbies, if the count goes we won't be able to identify the Newbie or make allowances for the FAQ's

True, G. You're right... but its only the regulars that seem to welcome the newbies anyhow with regularity. We see the newest member on the home page but of course that doesn't help if we have multiple new members. Then again we only welcome the new members who post a message on the forum, either a personal introduction, quick hello or Zed query.
If we move from post count to a non-numeric hierarchical structure such as junior, senior, guru, expert member could we not install a forum newbie status for first post, defaulting to junior member on post number 2.
Like yourself, I like to be able to greet new members so I wouldn't want to lose a way of recognising them joining up.

I think the post count should stay as it is evident from this thread that it is useful in lots of ways.

I think ranking some one as : EG "senior" or heaven forbid a "guru" based on the number of posts would go against those who make less posts but of a more helpful nature. It would rate the guy who posts " hello" "welcome" "nice" "cool" or even just a smilie above those that post well thought out helpful posts but less overallOxford_gruen_II wrote:

Well as a relative 'newby' with three weeks under my belt, my opinion is that the post count is a good idea. To me when joining, it helped define users who were dedicated to the site and also dedicated if you like to their vehicles. The advice and technical knowhow that was given to someone like myself, with very little mechanical knowledge, helped me take on a job that perhaps I would not have taken on without looking at the users posts prior and deciding on their level of experiance.
Perhaps this approach was unwise, but needless to say all the advice i was given was superb resulting in a successful repair.
Long live the counts!

Why not put a check box in the profile page to allow individual users to choose whether the post count is on or off.
The default setting could be set to on and the check box would only be able to be changed after say 10 posts, this would allow new members to be identified. After that it is the choice of the individual
