Driver track day training
Driver track day training
Hi
I'm looking for an event that will provide me with some instruction on how to drive my Z on the track (perferably in my car).
I'm planning a trip to the Nurburgring next year and need to hone my skills a bit.
Any comments or contacts would be gratefully appreciated.
thanks
Paul

Better Driving Days 2005
Look on the "check your dairy" Forum for BDD 2005.First one due on 31st March at Mallory Park.At each of the days, the Institute of Advanced motorists will have assessors to take interested BMW Club members out for free onRoad advice.
3 Day NurburgRing Driving Course , in the Second week of August.Circuit is Closed to the public, and divided into 2-3Km sections to learn in safety in small groups, each with an Instructor & Coach.
Working on Regional Skid Pan Days , although not a lot of interest shown, but it may change over the Winter!!!

Paul - I would endorse completely ZZZEMCO's comments.
The BMWCC Better Driving Days are superbly organised, and attract like minded individuals who are respectful of everyone's skill levels. It's a great way of getting to know your car, understand its limits and hone your own skills. There are always plenty of people on hand to give tips and advice as well as take the passenger seat next to you for real 'corner to corner' tuition
Highly recommended.
(There is a BMWCC trip to the Nurbergring each year which I am planning to attend in 2005)

It's just a pity insurers don't see it that way...Giles wrote:The BMWCC Better Driving Days are superbly organised, and attract like minded individuals who are respectful of everyone's skill levels. You never Stop Learning!!!!!!!
Not ALL insurers are Equal!!! Heritage Ins , Allow Better Driving Days in their Classic policies, AND will give an Extra 10% to Members who have passed the IAM Test.
We must show More insurers, that we are not a bunch of speed freaks, just enthusiastic drivers who are willing to improve our Road safety skills.
On circuit driving gives the chance to experience How Your car responds to a drivers good, bad or indifferent skills,NOT something you can safely do on the public roads. So-- after the circuit drives, go with An IAM instructor , for a free assessment of what ,--- perhaps MAY improve your skill, its NOT-any reflection on your Macho image!!!-just a tiny chance that it may save YOU, from that carnage that Only happens to the OTHER driver. It Can happen to You--I Know-the scars are always there.
So --Just to remind you, after a Good Night out, NO driving eh!!! put a call thru to www.ring.wegen.de/welcome.php Driver Training at its best--click Foto-galerie . See you all in August !!!!!

Skidpan training
Has anyone tried the simulator training, where the instructor lifts the car with additional wheels? There's one going on locally (Cornwall) for £99 for the day (with instruction)

Any skidpan, better than none !!
Better if in your own car, as you are familiar with it.Have driven own car on Tallow, oil/water but I found the quickest loss of control, was on a VW Golf , that had the rear fitted with swivel steel solid castors.
Control was lost at 6-8mph, at the blink of an eye!!!. Very good practice to try to catch it before complete revolution. You didnt need a large area to have a session, small car park would do , No oil or mess.

Attended a better driving day/driving experience today at Millbrook testing grounds.. Firstly drove to the site with the advisor who gave notes on driving techniques and seating position.
Then 3hrs on the Millbrook site, used most of the facilities including the Alpine test route to practice lines into corners, braking/or not!! and acceleration and turns. Then onto a handling circuit which was pretty amazing to do at speed. Then onto the Bowl for a few high speed laps. The advisor did a couple and then I got my chance..wow 100mph and let go of the wheel, strange sort of feeling.
I then did the 1 mile straights and braking (175) Next get to 100mph on the straight let go of the wheel and stand on the brakes, Yes the car stops rapidly in a straight line
I also had a go at some power slides on the smooth surface and then tried doing it with the traction control on- impossible and you get an idea what the system can do.
I then returned to the Alpine circuit as I felt I had learnt quite a bit on the section, more to do with road driving..
If anybody ever has the chance to do a course at Millbrook then please do, it was a brilliant day out and you do learn alot of processes that aren't just for track use. Oh and you get to break the UK speed limit quite a few times..
I also got the instuctor to do a few laps to let me really see what the car can do.. left me a little sheepish to say the least

Trip to Millbrook
I did Millbrook some years ago on a corporate day out.
Justin Bell took me round the banked oval and handling circuit in a Porsche. We did the oval at 166mph when he took his hands off the steering wheel -------scary.

I think they all Car Club BDD dates were published in the last magazine - I'll check tonight and report back (unless ZZZEMCO beats me to it!)garyw wrote:any idea's when the next Donnington better driving day is on?
cheers garyw
(I think Donnington might be Silverstone this year and is being published as CSL day although quite why I've no idea )
Must have just cancelled it then! - ZZZEMMCO made a post on the relevant thread last night!DavidM wrote:Looks good but damned expensive - Castle Combe is off - I just rung to book for us and they said it is cancelled/postponed

OK now I am confused - I rang to book it - wanted spaces for both PN and myself - and the lady said it has been cancelled - it may be rescheduled for August or September - but they didn't know that it would be
I was disappointed as I had a redhot credit card burning a hole in my wallet - all ready to pay for the day

No chance of getting the Alpine circuit as a BDD.. great 'Ring fluffer if every there was..garyw wrote:Russel, I was there in November, what a playground!!!! Picked up a brochure, and hey there's the address.. Its the obvious http://www.millbrook.co.uk garyw
First section I did was the Alpine circuit, Fanbloodytastic ,amazing, what a section. Tutor took me around and scared the life out of me, or was that the car.M Blur wrote:No chance of getting the Alpine circuit as a BDD.. great 'Ring fluffer if every there was..
and yes it does feel like a mini ring
Certainly an idea.. especially given the cost of 'Ring trips etc. I'd be right up for the next day.. maybe we can get a thread running and gather numbers from M Power and Porsche forums..garyw wrote:First section I did was the Alpine circuit, Fanbloodytastic ,amazing, what a section. What do you think John (Safe).. being our 'Ring afficionado?

Caslte Combe-Postponed.
Sorry to now Confirm Castle Combe has had to be Postponed.
maybe later in year.
The "Alpine" is a good Ring taster, sharp radius on bends, does wake up the Reflexes, for spirited driving.
