Hi Ivor

This car belongs to Specialist Cars in Stevenage Hertfordshire.
They used to have it on display alongside a Z8 which I believe they have now sold. I was told it was painted at their Luton bodyshop in TVR flip paint. Originally it was a Green car. BTW how many Z1's were at Gaydon?

I wasn't keen on the flip paint, perhaps 10 years ago I would've been a fan but I can't help but think that any single colour would've been better.

Off topic - what is with the guys rolled up jeans in the top pic? lol...

I wouldn't have that myself but it actually looks quite good. Suits the concept-car styling in a funny sort of way.

Wow, it looks like it's in mint condition. It must belong to a Dutch or German chap! :D

Hi peoples, my name is Paul, I look after this car on behalf of Specialists Cars in Stevenage, it is so nice to see this post on this car including the great pics!

Gaydon was a great success with lots of fab BMW's, inc one lovely red Z1.

To clarify a couple of points, the paint is a bit contriversal I know, you either love it or hate it, personally I like the classic cars to be in there standard form however there is a good reason for this car being in this colour.
Basically we rescued this Z1 as it was in a bit of a state and needed too much work which the owner could not finance, we brought the car and used it to showcase our young talent at our dealer, the car became an apprentice project, the apprentices in the workshop stripped the car bare and rebuilt the chassis and engine and ended up replacing most of the cars components with genuine parts.
Whilst the car was in bits we decided to get the bodyshop apprentices to repaint the tired bodywork, we decided on this colour as it is one of the hardest colours to paint (I'm reliably told), so thought it would be a good challenge, as you can see by the pictures they did a good job.
The interior was re-coloured by them too.
NOTE: the bodyshop is in hitchin.

The car only gets out twice a year, Gaydon and across the road at Knebworth, other than that it mainly sits in the showroom at Stevenage (next to the Z8 which we still own, we originally had two!).

At least i know where to come now if i need some help and tips, BMW technical data for this car is limited!!

All the best Paul :-)

Welcome - good story! I personally think the car looks great and I speak as someone of inherently conservative taste!

Hard to tell from the photos but the paint finish looks very good.

Great stuff Paul, its neat to get the younger generations interested in cars
that are considered classics or near classics. They have made a very good job on the Z1 going by the photo's. Im sure the Zd guys here would always be of help if asked.

Cheers Paul.

Personally, I love it. What is strange is that in the Gaydon pictures, the one from the rear looks remarkably like Urgrun, while the one from the front quarter has a patch that catches the light exactly as Traumschwartz does and yet your pics from the showroom look very like Magic Violet. That TVR colour manages to include all the Z1 colours bar Top Red and Fun yellow!

I wasn't at Gyadon, but from the pictures it looks top notch condition.

Well done Paul. I know where to come when I go for my Estoril colour change!
Best regards,

Sam Lever.

OH one question I must ask you guys, we are strongly concidering re-painting the car in its original colour, what do you think, keep it the same funky colour or paint it green?
A topic for descussion tomorrow...........

Cheers

I wouldn't repaint it! Plenty of green ones in the world and it's hardly the world's most popular colour. That colour's unique, hard to do as you said previously and suits the car's funky nature.

A colleague of mine was being very complimentary about it to a couple of days ago - he knows I have a Z1 and so was keen to tell me about the amazing flip Z1 he'd seen in a BMW showroom in Stevenage whilst buying a 330d last weekend.

I've seen that in real life and the FIRST thing I'd do if I bought it would be to respray it. Blue probably. :shake:

A Blue car with cream leather and green bum sections, I doubt you'll attract many customers with that combo.
Unless you reverse the interior, I would leave it as it is, the crazy colours compliment each other.
If you must go OEM, do something unusual, Blue with grey leather or Black with Red/Lemon leather.

I'd probably go for an all cream interior. Because I'm practical like that.

Oh wow, need to see if we can squeeze in a V10......looks good with the V8, I wonder if it actually drives great though??
Thanks for the replies, I think it should stay this colour or, if it comes to it, should be painted in original green.
