Steering Rack Compatability

Post by sfh3l »

Hi Guys,

I can't help thinking that I should know this already, but can someone tell me if an E30 M3 steering rack is a straight replacement for the Z1 (obviously higher geared), as in will it fit to the front subframe without any cutting, welding and general mashing about?

Just an idea I have in mind :D

Thanks in advance.
Best regards,

Sam Lever.

Not sure why you'd want one of those, but isn't the Z1 more E36 tech? They all fit each other though E30/E36/E46, the latter have much nicer ratios to quicken the steering up.

Hi Sam,

The answer is yes. But E36 item would probably do the trick for less cash and more readily available.
As your other respondent says I think the E46 rack will also fit. My understanding is the only other parts that might need changing are the rack feed pipes.

Yes it is a direct swap

No modifications needed.
I have done this three times.
