Both numbers are available on eBay, one cartridge type and one paper element.

There's only one. Standard was a normal metal-bodied spin-on filter and then there's a paper element version that is more environmentally friendly. But not sure they were ever fitted in the day.

The oil filter you need is a spin on one located under the exhaust manifold. (you need to drop the rear floor engine cover) BMW part number is 11421707779 (£15.00). This filter is made by MAHLE, part number OC49 and they are £6.95 from Opie oils. BMW recommend 4.25 litres of Shell Helix HX7 10w-40, again from Opie oils. (don't forget you get 10% off with the BMW car club. use code "straightsix") You will probably also need an oil filter wrench, 74 mm x P14. The filter is tightened to 20Nm (or very tight be hand) The sump plug is tightened to 25Nm (don't forget you'll need a new sump plug washer).

Thanks, all resolved.

The car is booked in for an oil service and fresh brake fluid on Thursday with the garage finally convinced only one filter is required, the standard type spin on canister 11421707779.

A heads up. One BMW dealer declined to undertake the work as they were unwilling to risk breaking the by now brittle front wheel arch liners to which the engine undertray is attached. I replaced mine last year but notice the rear liners also need doing as they are beginning to split around the mounting studs. A repair washer will hold the situation.
