See the attached thread. The BMW recommendation is Castrol SHC 630 which is difficult to source and very expensive. Redline MTL 75W-80 GL4 is a widely used alternative.

Gear change when cold since filling with Redline MTL is certainly easier and smoother. There doesn't seem to be any disadvantage when the gearbox is hot.

Hi Sam,
I've changed my gearbox oil this week ready for the Z1 tour. I spoke to a BMW dealer and they couldn't tell me which oil so they contacted BMW technical and they couldn't tell me either, so I have gone with Mobil Syntrans B 75w (1.25 L) apparently it's made for BMW's. I'm also replacing the diff oil with Mobil Syntrax 75w-90 (1.7 L). Because of the awkward location of the gearbox filler nut I ran a tube from above the engine and poured in the oil that way. The diff is also in an awkward position so I took off the rear silencer. The torque settings for the gearbox is 50Nm and the Diff is 60Nm. Good luck.
