New Leather for seats

Post by acaciolo »

I am throwing around the idea of having my seats redone. They were redone by the previous owner 8-10 years ago, and they still look "ok," but not great. They were completely done is a rather shiny black leather, and the part near the lower back is starting to gap.

I have 2 great local shops near me that will redo both seats for about $2,000 with material or $1200 if I supply the material. I see that one vendor still lists as having the Camo green leather (although I haven't gotten a price yet) so I was thinking about doing it like the original and then alcantara at the rest of the seat.

If I don't do the camo, I'd probably use black as a replacement and then alcantara at the remaining spots. Anybody have any suggestions?

thanks

Hi Tony

Z1 seats are one of the more challenging aspects of ownership, most trimming shops don't like doing these seats because the seats are foam injected and the foam disintegrates when they are taken apart!

You say yours have already been done once before so maybe the base foam has had some stabilising done? I think black leather and alcantara as you've suggested would look good and if done well should last for years.

If originally is important to you Michael Kabbert is showing on his website reproduction camouflage leather.

BMW currently don't have any seats left in stock, or as I understand a remanufacturing date for when they will have, as is the case sadly for much of the interior trim.

See my thread when I had my seats done albeit mine are the fun-gelb leather/cloth variant. https://zroadster.net/forum/viewtopic.p ... ts#p342602

Also TJS who has had his seats refurbished, also not camouflage.

It's not an easy or cheap process to go through, but the car is transformed once done. But beware there is a certain reluctance to sit on them without a towel or something similar in place once done!

Good luck and stay safe.

thanks for the great info! I emailed MIchael a few days ago, but I am thinking the Corona Virus might have them not working 100%

Your seats are amazing. Mine don't look terrible now...i just don't love the shiny black leather. I'll post some pictures soon. I will most likely to black/alcantara since they seems to be the most readily available here. If Michael K. has any of the camo left and it isn't too crazy expensive, I might go for that to keep it original.

thanks
