During a long drive yesterday prior to winter hibernation the ABS warning light came on after stopping to fill the fuel tank. It went out after 5 minutes. Checked and cleaned the contacts on the electrical relays on the hydro unit once they had cooled down, (they were very hot) but nothing visibly wrong. Moved the car this morning and all seems to be ok.
Tried to lock the brakes on the road, but failed, it just stopped very quickly as expected.
I believe a lit ABS and/or traction control warning light is an automatic MOT failure ?
Anything else to look for or is this a BMW dealer analytical system check.

Tony,
I had same issue a while back and it was resolved simply by removing the wheel speed sensors and cleaning them. Old grease and dust was the culprit within the hub cavities. One small bolt to remove.

Thanks Pat
I will add the sensor task to the winter "To Do" list, not too big this year, check / measure / replace brake components.
The rear in hub parking brake shoes need to looked at, not really a wear item .. unless you are a plonker and don't fully release the handbrake and you get a burning smell and a very hot right rear wheel hub.

Re: ABS warning light !!
I had such issue some months ago, it was front ABS sensor.
I cleaned the sensor with brake cleaner but it was not enough. Wire was faulty.
