Stained alloy
My drivers side rear pad has worn right down to the point where it has cut into the disc. This has happened while on the Donegal cruise, where I had no option but to drive it home to Belfast.
The alloy is now stained orange and a sponge wash didn't shift it at all.
Please help me guys with suggestions to get this shifted. Don't want to have to buy a new alloy on top of new pads, discs, an oil service and an insurance renewal.
Thanks
C

some people may scream in horror at this but i find that Cif mousse works well on alloys.. just be sure to rinse well afterwards. It might still take some persuasion with a cloth or sponge but worth a go
If you don't fancy the Cif approach, Halfords do their own brand engine cleaner. I've used it on my motorbike engine and wheels and that's good stuff.. again, you have to make sure it's rinsed well afterwards.
I suppose it depends if the wheel is just stained or if the lacquer has become discoloured due to excess heat.. could be a bit tricky if it's the latter.

Thank you both for your advice. Really appreciate it.

Just looked at wheel again there after Dad tried to clean it up with T cut and Auto Glym Paint renovator. Looks better but still about 50% covered. Can't see well enough to see if alloy is scratched from the cleaning.
Its rusting steel dust that's on it.

Might borrow some from Andrew. But will WW really move this rusting steel dust? Surely this is a lot more difficult to take off than brake dust and tar?big cheesy wrote:If going for Wonder Wheels try Wilkinsons I have found they can be £3-4 cheaper.

Thanks for the warning mateleahandsteve wrote:Be careful with Wonder Wheels, i used in on my old E36 320 alloys and it stained the lacquer.
It was not very noticeable but you could see that the lacquer had changed colour slightly in patches.

How about a trip to your local carwash team, they use a mild acid spray on the wheels that seems to do a good job.
Was also going to suggest Cillet Bang Grime and Lime ( gets rid of rust )but not sure if its ok on the lacquer, it may dull the finish

Thanks G
The alloy is not 100% clean yet but starting to look better and isn't being scratched as its cleaned up. I'm sure Dad will have it spotless for me getting home tonight.

Wheel still not 100%. 2 spokes are now clean though.
Just realising I'll have to clean the inside of it as well.
