foot well lighting
Re: foot well lighting
Got back from holiday to find my set amongst the post. Fitted late this afternoon took about 45 mins, I used the splice method of connecting behind the A pillar, the red scotch lock connectors were too big to fit behind the trim. Wired like this they come on when a door is opened together with the normal interior light. They also illuminate when I press the button on my key. Nice to see where I am putting my feet now with this mod

Re: foot well lighting
I've got mine too but now having second thoughts about fitting them as I have just purchased these which I am thinking about fitting under dash as I think they will look more like an original factory fit item:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3602-BMW-X5-E ... 784wt_1328
Its just purely down to personal preference because I want to keep the car as original looking as possible.
Okay you may say that they will be out of sight so whats the difference?
But thats just the way I am I suppose
However, I may fit the strip LED's into the glovebox instead as I can see how they would be ideal for inside there where space really is at a premium.

ok I had a message yesterday from another member whom I had completely forgotten about, is there anyone else who hasn't received theres?
Re: foot well lighting
Had problems with the sticky holding the strips on to the plastic trim in the footwells, passenger side keeps detaching itself, solved this today by drilling small holes in the trim and using nylon tie wraps to hold the length of leds onto the plastic trim. Drivers side is holding with the sticky but has dropped off once so may do the same that side with the nylon tie wraps.
Just make sure the ratchet head of the ties are on the outside of the trim panel otherwise the trim will not butt up against the other trim when you refit it.

The wife makes her own greeting cards so she had some very sticky double sided tape seems to have worked a treat.
Had no bother since the installation.
Probably bought of eBay

Having used the amber LED lights I got from eBay in the footwells as per my post, today I installed the littlefella LED lights into the boot, one strip either side and I have to say I'm really impressed. Nice one Jason, great bit of kit

Re: foot well lighting
already done. though there not fitted at the moment
was going to use them as side repeaters, but cant decide on what to use to cover the holes where the repeaters are now, maybe a z badge of some sort
there is also some question as to the legality of this, however I can rule this out as I checked with the vosa website
the last pic is photo shopped

still getting the odd message for these, yes I do still have loads
Re: foot well lighting
I am looking to fit to the interior light. I can see how to get the wire up the A pillar and along the top of the screen but not a way of getting the wire to the interior light if it is to be hidden. Have others that have connected to the interior light managed to hide the wire. Thanks
Re: foot well lighting
I pulled out the light unit and drilled a small hole into the the base of it to feed the two wires through (+ & -) from the LED's....johnz3 wrote:I am looking to fit to the interior light. They were a beach to solder to the metal contact plates though, They kept popping off.
I'm no soldering expert and so it took a few attempts and gently pulling on the wires to make sure they were well connected
Designed or not designed, that is the question.
Re: foot well lighting
Thanks and understand that now you have explained. What I am not clear on is how to 'hide' the wires as they bridge the gap from the screen to the interior light.

Re: foot well lighting
I didn't go all the way to the light on the second fitment of these lights, I connected them to the light feed wires in the A post, originaly I did go into the light through a hole that is already in the fitting, its more of a slot than a hole but they do go through (its in the back of the light fitting).

that's great another one joins the fold
Re: foot well lighting
I got around to doing mine as well yesterday but the things wouldn't stick even after using alcohol to clean the areas so I used some servo tape instead hopefully they'll still be stuck when I check on my break tonight. In my haste installing does the A piller cover have the rubber over it or tucked in?

Re: foot well lighting
im sure mine was tucked in, a couple of others have had this sticking issue, mine is still stuck with the original backing and has never come off. I wonder if some kind of silicone based cleaners have been used on the inside trim on some cars, if you have an internal valet then silicon based sprays are used. double sided sellotape works well but it needs to be sellotape branded not a cheaper copy.

Re: foot well lighting
Hi Southerboy and to littlefeller. There is a ruling somewhere that here in the UK only emergency vehicles can display 'Blue Lights' anywhere on a vehicle.
I also believe that it extends to the underside and the fitting of them to the axle cases/floor pans.

Re: foot well lighting
Surely your first objective would be ... will it pass the M.O.T. ?
Most things, having passed the mot test, will be accepted by the police.
I will check what the tester's guide says about side repeaters tomorrow and come back to this tomorrow evening.
Blue lights are a big no no.
White to be seen from the front.
Red to be seen from the rear.
Amber to be seen from front, rear and sides. As a general rule.

Re: foot well lighting
Finally got around to fitting the footwell lights... Amazing! Instantly make the car just that little bit better. Fitted this evening and only took about 20 mins, I used the red scotch lock connectors tucked into the a pillar behind the trim no problem. Nice touch when you click the RCL fob to open the car and the footwells light up too. Just need to do the boot light now.

Re: foot well lighting
I think I would prefer to go with less leds in a very warm white and splice into the instrument lights behind the heating controls, then you have a nice ambient lighting all the time?

Re: foot well lighting
this would be very easy, these strips have 2 positive feeds and 2 ground, I remove one of each while building them. all that is needed is to leave all 4 wires and a simple resister to lower the current to dim the lights, then you could have one feed from the dome light and the second from the instrument feed, simples

checked on the ashtray light, It does actually dim with the dimmer switch, will give this a try note to myself - should have checked this before ordering a remote dimmer from ebay
