Re: Class and Tacky
It's all a matter of personal taste.
The detail and amount of work hours on some cars is phenomenal, not to be confused with the cars that look like they have crashed into Halfords window

Personally I don't like the Supercharger poking through the bonnet, but I can see that the amount of engineering work and calculations involved is to be admired.

I disagree with 'very classy', I think the front bumper is horrible, and the side gills and scoops look like smoothed inflated halfords one' s
What we all have is different ideas's of what is classy and what is not, its whatever makes us happy with our own car that's important,
I find mostly that age plays the biggest part. There is no way I would think my first Hillman Avenger was classy now, with what I did to it, but back then when I was 18.... just wow!

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..

mine was the 1500GL, couldn't afford the Tiger with the ¾ vinyl roof,
Mine had a full vinyl roof though,
Cut the front bumper middle section out leaving just corner bumpers, and a square front numberplate
Fitted two Cibie Bi-Oscars and two Cibie Oscars so I could be a rally driver!
raised (yes, raised) the back end, fitted rear fog lights below the back bumper and wired them to my brakes, (Got pulled loads of times)
fitted Sparkright electronic ignition and a Radyot stick on heated rear window.
Fitted a plastic louvre grill to the back window
fitted sheepskin headrests over the front seat, with matching sheepskin covers.
Covered the headlining and dashboard in fur.......
nearly fitted sidepipe exhausts but was talked out of it
Pioneer casette/radio with a 7 band graphic Equaliser booster and pioneer 6 inch speakers.
Savage wheel trims to complete the look....
it was 'sick' innit

I bet she said don't show that picture
Looking at the cars in the background bring back memories
Oh my I am showing my age now lol
Tell your wife she looks lovely
Insurance is relative
I had a Austin mini cooper the insurance was £32 I was 19ish
43 years ago that was over a months money or even more
it must equate to a lot today
footnote
if that was a twin cam or Mexico escort
they are worth in excess of £25k today

Re: Class and Tacky
don't remember what model it was, it was later fitted with a roll bar, good job too as he rolled it. I had noticed that along with the escort two other cars parked also had vinyl roofs.Boysie wrote:I bet she said don't show that picture

Re: Class and Tacky
Identical model and colour to my very first car an Austin A55 mkII Cambridge
Cost £25 to buy and £75 to insure (3 x cost of car) so it makes me laugh when you hear youngsters moaning when they pay £3k to insure a car that cost £1k as if its something new!!

I put spotlights on my first car - along with a small steering wheel, go-faster stripes and wider wheels from a Cortina. It was a 1965 Ford Anglia 105E (deluxe ). Modern design with OHVs and syncronmesh on all 4 gears! What a beast 997 cc. top speed of 73 MPH and breath-taking 0 to 60 time of 26.9 seconds.

Is the one with the roof rack a Capri ?littlefeller wrote:don't remember what model it was, it was later fitted with a roll bar, good job too as he rolled it. I had noticed that along with the escort two other cars parked also had vinyl roofs.Boysie wrote:I bet she said don't show that picture

The white car directly behind the Escort in the centre of the photo is I think an Austin Allegro. What a car !!

Re: Class and Tacky
allegro, my brother had 2 of them, he also had a morris marina, notice the metal flap door handles of the marina parked to the left (I remember those door handles. did some of the earlier capri had a round window for the rear passengers? or was it the headlights, cant remember now. my brother also had a maxi.
Re: Class and Tacky
Yes,the Mk1 and Mk1 facelift cars did have a fairly round ended rear side window. In fact these were one of the first cars to have the window hinges glued directly to the glass itself. Unfortunately to my own cost I found this wasn't a roaring success as my nearside on fell off,it happened to my friend too but his fell off whilst he was doing a fair speed.Modern bonding has improved no end.Headlights were roughly the same as an Avenger in shape. All this at a time when an NSU Prinz was as close as you might see to a BMW in shape at least.

Class and Tacky
My dad had Morris Marina TC from new, from a independent dealer, it was his company car, he died and my brother bought the car, he had some work done and discovered it had a lotus engine in it, not sure if my dad knew about this, he was a sly one lol and had a good job, it did fly I remember that

Re: Class and Tacky
my friend brought a sunbeam off an old duffer only to find it was a lotus sunbeam, very collectable even then. it liked to catch fire, quite often he would have to pull over with the fire extinguisher in hand it also tried to kill him on several occasions. he did a 270 degree spin on one particular corner, ended up facing a graveyard (this was the final straw, his wife was sat in the passenger seat and she wasn't to chuffed) so he sold it before it DID kill him (or was made to sell it I suspect).
we should start another thread on car owner history including pics if there available, its great looking at these old cars. but we don't want to hijack this thread I think this was my fault, sorry
if you like class and tacky then you need to take a look at a forum titled barryboys, its hilarious.

Re: Class and Tacky
I "BOUGHT" a TC coupe many moons ago for a brief period. The TC ( twin carb) had the same engine as the MGB and was very torquey, but the handling on all Marina's left a lot to be desired ( moggy minor underpinnings with torsion bars front and leaf springs rear). Your dad must have had the Lotus twin cam fitted, must have been very "entertaining" to drive!
