wheels and tyres 2.8

Post by zee3zee3 »

hi been reading that a 2.8 need staggered wheels on 17" rims pre bmw specs - thinking of changing the 16" ones , but this is only on summer tyres on winter tyres 225/45r17 on 7.5 rims are fine per the specs ? anyone come across this before just thinking how does this work for insurance and manufacture specs etc

Staggered rims were an option on the 2.8. You'd have to ask your insurer about any insurance implications.

Yes - I get the idea that you are thinking about changing your 16 inch wheels for staggered 17 inch, as per the factory option - but I do not have a clue as to what you mean by:

but this is only on summer tyres on winter tyres

If you want a sensible answer, you have to ask a sensible question . . .

hiya thanks for the replies my query was that in the manual on summer tyres it advises they should be staggered rims with different size tyre , but in the same paragraph its says they can all be the same i.e 7.5 rims on 225/45 r17 provided that its winter tyres just puzzled as to why this is as I have access to a mint set of 17" bmw alloys off smaller engine z3 but they have summer tyres on so in theory if I change the tyres I can use them but is there such a difference between summer and winter tyres just thought it a bid odd ?

That is BMWs suggestion, narrower the better for winter.

90% of inurance companies are now fine with winter tyres, but I always call them to let them know I will be putting winters on.

Nothing stopping you using 17s with the same tyres on, the wider tyres on the rear helped add a bit of grip and increase some understeer, which many prefer, I have found going the same all round can be preferable, less tramlining, and a slightly more neutral handling balance.
